Island Sunset Music Mordred was coming back from the harbor late in the afternoon. The weather was clear with a light breeze and the sun was just beginning it descent. The air smelled strongly of the a salty sea and had the barest hints of a chill to suggest it was spring. Nearing the west side housing district, the sounds of life, people, and activity started to override the coast and the windswept fields. Things were peaceful and could be described as another day in paradise. However, Mordred's shoulders seemed laden with thoughts unfitting the location. Mordred wore loose fitting pants and shirt made of a dark and heavier material than the typical vacation wear. His shirt had long sleeves, also unusual given the location. What stood out more than his dress was a face almost entirely obscured by wrappings befitting a burn victim or some other severe, facial trauma patient. His gray-metallic eyes with lizard-like pupils were still visible along with the raw, red flesh around the eyes not entirely covered by the bandages. While his hands were in pants pockets, his feet were bare. His toes seemed a bit over-sized in proportion and unusually clean despite being bare. Little scars decorated the pale skin, marring their hygienic appearance. Mordred's Wrapped Face Just barely audible over the din of town, gentle sobbing was just loud enough for the gecko-man to notice. He stopped in his tracks on one of the streets, seemingly to come out of his somber state and back to the moment. His feet made to keep moving forward, but he did not leave like something held him in place. Finally, he turned toward the source of the noise and proceeded down a narrow street lined with dwellings on both sides. On a stone stoop of one of the small homes sat a little girl, rubbing her eyes, and obviously distraught over something. Mordred was about to approach her when he caught a glimpse of his reflection in a nearby window. He hesitated with eyes that appeared sad or remorseful. The Little Girl

Mairu had turned to wondering the island of Alana for some time, seeing as how he needed to familiarize himself with the place before getting to work on anything with Shiori. Having been put under the giant woman's care, the boy was a bit antsy about working with her given their first meeting saw him near suffocate from her grip. She seemed okay, and had a good standing with Mercutio, but he wondered if that would mean she'd just tell him everything. World leaders had a lot of secrets, and while the child had not intention of starting trouble on the small island nation, his curiosity had gotten the better of him once more. Now with free time until he was summoned to work, the boy decided to explore, struggling to really find concrete information to satiate his hunger. People were harder to approach here, even though a surprising number of them were at or near his age. Everyone seemed a real grouch about something, and there didn't seem to be anything really fun to do either on the island, making it hard to find a large group of people to question. Then again, how would questioning one of them really go? Everyone seemed to assume he was an orphan of sort, but how would they react if he said he'd ended up marooned on the island? The child's thoughts were interrupted as he heard the familiar sounds of crying, his small feet hitting the dirt as he picked up the pace, the island's warm sun doing a fast job of making him sweat. Guided by pure heroic intent, Mairu came to see a small girl sitting on a step, balling her eyes out over something. Feeling the urge to do good rising, Mairu picked up the pace, worry setting in over what could have brought tears to someone younger than himself. Raising his hand, the child was about to call out when his foot snagged a rock, tripping forward and tumbling all the way, kicking up a storm of dust before he came to a stop. Almost immediately forgetting about the accident, the fox boy stood up, dusted himself off and offered his right tail to the girl for her tears. Leaning forward, Mairu questioned, "What's wrong? Did someone take somethin from you?" So caught up in the girl, kitsune had yet to even notice the bandaged man to his side, focusing more on the problem that lay before him. |

The girl took the tail and wiped her tears after Mairu's stumble brought her out of her crying with a start. She started to calm down and was about to blow her nose when she thought better on it. *sniff* *sniff* "Thank you. I guess you could kinda say that," The little girl admitted. Morded moved closer to listen and oversee the interaction, but opted not to directly involved himself at that time. His 'clothes', hair, 'bandages', as well as his feet started to fade or darken from their natural colors to muddier versions that allowed him to standout less against the brownish shack he leaned against as he listened. "I sometimes like to get away and spend time by the sea. Reminds me of mommy..." The girl looked like she might cry again as she continued, "...I found a nice place with rocks by the water. I could get close to the water without getting wet and there were lots of crabs to play with, but then..." She turned to Mairu with an angry expression, "...that jelly thing appeared and hasn't left my special place. I hid my treasures there too. It won't leave..." She started to cry again, her hands burying her face, and through sobs added, "And I can't get it to go away on my own." Her light dress road up enough in the time Mairu had been there that some of her small, pale calves were visible and they revealed dark wounds that wrapped around her leg in a spiral pattern. The wounds looked like burns to Mordred who had education in the medical field. His eyes narrowed as he peered closer and remained that way. He appeared to be becoming agitated by the story. The geck-man remained patient and present, however, as there was not yet any actionable information. A rocky outcrop on an island the size of Alana would likely take hours to locate and there was that many until the sun set. |

The boy smiled as the girl took his tail, relinquishing control as she wiped away her tears. At the very least, she seemed friendlier than others he'd dealt with on the island... well, beyond Shiori who approached a level of almost too friendly. The girl's tale, however, slowly brought down the fox boy's smile, describing how she'd found a nice place by the seaside to simply watch the waves before she was chased away by a "jelly thing", having to leave behind some precious belongings as a result! While Mairu was fast enough on the uptake to realize that the tyke was talking about a jellyfish, he was a little confused as to how such a creature could chase one off, being confined to the water. Seeing the girl's shins, however, Mairu realized that the creature had managed to harm her several times over, the fox knitting his brow as he realized just how mean this creature was. Dangerous or not, he had a duty to fulfill here. Offering his hand, Mairu looked the girl in the eyes as he stated, "Don't worry, I'm gonna find this thing and chase it away instead! You were there first anyway! All you gotta do is show me where it is! Hmm..." The child's face grew curious as he began to consider some factors, thinking over the danger of this mission and the responsibility of someone else under his wing. Perhaps going it alone was not the wisest choice, Mairu voicing this as he stated, "Maybe we should get an adult to come with us, just in case..." The boy looked to and fro, searching for anyone nearby who could help, a cloaked, humanoid shape reaching his visuals as his fox-like eyes picked out a tall person leaning on a shack. Taking a few steps forward, hopefully with the girl in hand, Mairu would wave with the free hand and yell out, "Hey, mister! Can you help us beat up somethin bad?!" |

The little girl tentatively gave Mairu her hand and was led forward. She still looked worried, but rather than tears, there was a small hope in her eyes in response to Mairu's words. Accompanying the fox boy, the girl was a more reserved presence but something about her lightened the atmosphere in the area in much the same way Mairu's optimism did. Mordred nodded his head and in a southern drawl replied "Ya." It came out lighter and cleaner in pitch than someone of his apparent size and build. As he leaned forward to follow after the children, his 'clothes' and skin let go of the wooden hue they had acquired and took on more natural fabric colors and patterns. His feet remained colored similarly colored and patterned to the ground they covered. Mordred's bandage covered face, inhuman eyes, and size intimidated the little girl. She clung to Mairu's arm with both of her's. Standing side by side, the girl was a few inches shorter than Mairu. When it was clear the boys were there to help her and they needed her to lead them, she finally shared her name as Elizabeth and started to lead Mairu by the hand out of town. The sun was touching the horizon and splashing the sky in the full array of reds and oranges befitting a south pacific sunset by the time the group reached the beach and Elizabeth pointed out a specific rocky outcropping. She didn't want to get any closer and was visibly frightened. From where they stood perhaps 60 feet off, Mordred could not see anything out of the ordinary. Just looked like a collection of rocks that the waves occasionally splashed against. Mordred also noted the circling seagulls...then suddenly a shimmering blob crept up and over the rocks into view. Once it was fully in position on the rocks, it probably stood as tall and wide as a man and that was without considering its countless tentacles that started to stretch out and scout the sands around it in all directions. Occasionally, a bird would swoop in to peck at its body or tentacles, and would immediately become rigid and spasm occasionally while a tentacle encircled it and dragged it toward the main body. Mordred made to move closer but hesitated and thought better of it. The tentacles seemed like they would come to them soon enough. It was hard to discern the exact range of the tentacles and the slow way in which they probed the sands was deceptive when it came to their actual speed and precision. The Jellyfish?! "If Elizabeth was able ta git away after bein' attacked by that thing, it's probably fair to say the creature's more a threat to small animals than to us. 'Magine it'll hurt quite a bit though to get caught up in those tentacles..." Mordred mused out loud as he stood not far from the children. |

Fortunately, it seemed the tyke was willing to go on with Mairu, taking his hand as he waddled over to the person hiding behind the shack. The tall man seemed to be agree with helping the duo on their quest, not even offering a question or two in spite of the implied violence he would be a part of, making the boy raise an eyebrow as he wondered if the man had been eavesdropping on their conversation. While he wondered this, the stranger stepped out from behind his hiding spot and seemed to change visually as he did so, though Mairu couldn't put his finger on exactly what had changed. While he did this, his companion quickly grew fearful, Mairu feeling two arms wrap around his as he looked up at the man, quickly realizing the girl was scared and instinctively patting her head to calm her down. He had to admit, it was strange not being the youngest (at least seemingly) or smallest of a group for a change and he wondered if he'd get used to it. At the very least, the girl calmed down enough when she saw neither of them were a danger, sharing her name and leading the pair of boys down to her special spot on the beach, Mairu remaining quiet during the journey as he was pulled along and simply looked around the yet to be explored area, taking in the sights and overall enjoying them. One sight he did not enjoy, however, was that of the giant jellyfish monster, the creature looking like some sort of monster he'd seen in only the worst of books. The boy had to admit he was at least somewhat shaken by its appearance and size, the bird that ended up a static creature not at all helping. And yet, he had to stay strong, he was a hero after all! It was at this point the cloaked man spoke up, a southern drawl exiting his mouth as Mairu realized he hadn't caught the man's name but figuring formalities could wait till after. For now, he had to focus on the matter at hand, with their adult aid making some good points about what the creature could dish out. On the other hand though... "We still gotta see how strong it is though, or maybe we can scare it away if we hurt it enough," the fox boy declared, putting a hand to his chin as he began to think. It was somewhat remorseful to hurt a creature merely protecting its territory, but it still did something very mean and he'd made a promise! But how to test its capabilities... Spotting some small rocks, Mairu quickly gained an idea, rushing over and picking up five of the small black stones. From his position, he began to chuck them at the creature, declaring, "Let's see... if he likes what he gives! Hyuh!" |

Mairu's black stones flew threw the air and nailed the immobile core of the creature with a rebounding force. The almost liquid nature of the body rippled where it was struck and the ripples coursed through the rest of the core. All eyes in the body directed, as best as they could, their attention on Mairu. The numerous tentacles extending out form the body started to weave their way toward the fox boy like a den of snakes all toward a common source. With a single visible target as the focus, the arms were much quicker than they were previously and would strike out at Mairu once they grew close enough. Mordred nodded his head in agreement with the tactic and started picking up his pace to the opposing side of the creature from Mairu. The gecko-man jogged through the sand, but his pace seemed hampered. On his way, he stiffly scooped up some colored shells sticking out of the sands. He was about to toss some shells but stopped his arm mid throw to take note of something. On the opposing side of the Jelly, facing away from Mairu, several of its tentacles had retracted to the body and were funneling themselves into the water. That's when Mordred's gecko-eyes picked up on the slightest of motion near the ocean off to Mairu's side. Mordred changed target from the jelly core and slung a shell like a throwing star. It spun and wobbled in-flight and was not the most accurate throw to begin with, but it landed in the general area of the disturbance of sand that Mordred saw and kicked up enough sand to reveal there were tentacles sneakily slithering beneath the sands toward Mairu at a slower pace and from a different direction. Only then did Mordred notice a couple of the creature's eyes had taken note of him now and some of its long arms were making their way to him. Mordred started to back up hastily, kicking sand around as he did so. The monstrous jelly had enough eyes and arms to go around. Dividing its attention did not seem like it would be enough. Mordred also noted the cunning of the creature with an annoyed expression found in his eyes. |

It seemed the monster was in no way keen about having rocks thrown at it, several eyes darting towards Mairu and seemingly... angry with him. He didn't think the jellyfish would have that level of intellect, having assumed it was just a strange beast of sorts that had started causing trouble in an area it saw as its own. Now though, he had to wonder if perhaps their foe had an actual thought process going on inside its head, having specifically hurt the girl out of some sort of spite. The fox boy didn't have long to figure this all out, however, seeing the tentacles dash towards him in an angry flurry, ready to to pay him back for the annoyance. In a rush, Mairu went onto all fours, his speed jumping as he started darting around the beach, dodging the attacks as best he could. It was only after a few seconds of this, however, that the boy saw the creature's tentacles dig themselves underground and make their way towards the tyke at an alternate route thanks to Mordred's attack. There was a flush of panic from the boy, uncertain on what to do as he was quickly being bombarded from all sides. With a fearful grunt, the boy closed his eyes, assuming the worst as he chucked his last black stone at the creature's body as hard as he could, no longer wanting to hold back against the wrathful beast but also running on some adrenaline. The rock Mairu threw sailed through the air, between all the tentacles that were weaving toward the fox-boy, and hit the Jellyfish monster right in its massive dome of a head. The rock bounced off like the one before it, but it flexed the outer membrane of the creature enough to hit one of the internal eyes, causing it to forcefully recoil. The whole core of the creature then toppled over onto the rocks it sat upon. Rigid edges sliced into its watery flesh and a sparkling ooze seeped out. All the tentacles suddenly stopped in their tracks before waving about frantically without any sense of direction or focus. Mairu and Mordred would need to be careful. Mordred was about to be attacked before the tentacles started spazzing out. In the moment of confusion, Mordred pulled out his energy katana that glowed blue as it became active in his hand. Unlike a metal sword, this sword seemed especially light and mobile in the gecko-man's hands despite him not being a swordsman of any kind. sword In moments, the massive jellyfish righted itself on the rocks with some stronger tentacles found around its base. The jelly was indeed hurt looking based on the seeping flood still dribbling down its body, however, there was a purplish milky substance seeping out of its eye and filling the sac. Any outer tare it came into contact with stopped leaking. However, although it looked like the Jellyfish was performing some sort of patch healing on itself, the process seemed to obscure its vision to some degree because most of the eyes were not enveloped in the milky substances. Before Mordred could make his move, all the tentacles around the Jelly rose up and fanned out in all directions and moved in an undulating fashion with an ease you would normally only see if the Jellyfish was still underwater. It made the beach a very dangerous area to be. Mordred sliced at a tentacle that got too close. The end fell to the sands steaming and blackened on the end that was cut. Like the rock that Mairu threw earlier, there was a more concentrated effort of wiggling tentacles now in Mordred's general vicinity. The gecko-man would not easily close the gap between him and the core with the jellyfish as it was now. Cutting a path would likely bring all the tentacles down on him before he'd make it over the sands to the creatures. LP Elizabeth hung back, cowering, and occasionally covering her eyes with her hands. |

Mairu kept his eyes closed in anticipation of the heavy shock, shaking on the spot as he feared the oncoming pain. That pain, however, never came, the boy opening his eyes to find that not only had his rock struck the beast's form, but it had actually given the thing a hardy enough jolt to knock it over. What followed, however, was less than pleasant as the goop that ran out made the boy a bit queezy, glad that the tentacles were no longer descending upon him but not a big fan of the gore that accompanied fighting. The stranger seemed to be handling himself fairly well though, the now frantically waving tentacles not even getting a flinch from him as he pushed through. Mairu slowly grew anxious, wondering how far this would all go. He was unhappy with the creature, but he didn't want to smite it or anything like that, just to make it go away long enough so that Elizabeth could get her belongings. Speaking of which, the fox's ears just made out the sounds of familiar crying, the boy turning his head to see the removed girl standing away from the combat and looking none too happy. Feeling a pang of guilt, Mairu assumed she was feeling the same way as him. "I-It's okay!" The boy yelled out to her suddenly with a wave, "We're just gonna make it go away without hurting it too much!" Considering it's side was mostly in shambles by now, the latter part of his declaration probably seemed a bit like a white lie, but he hoped the stranger with the sword would catch his line of thought. They couldn't very well murder the creature in front of a small girl, even if it was very mean. With the claim made, Mairu leaped forward after the tentacles, aiming to claw at the middle of a few and perhaps damage the beast just enough so that it would leave them all be to escape their onslaught. With each slice, Mordred sent several wriggling pieces of tentacle to the ground. The core sack of the creature was now filled with shimmering milky purple. The creature would likely be fully recovered from the couple rocks that hit it soon. Meanwhile, the barrage of tentacles became a greater onslaught. As Mordred drew closer, the tentacles became more accurate in how they weaved and whipped through the air. Something else Mordred found out as he moved in was the tentacles didn't even have to touch to shock their target. Severed pieces and missing whips of the tentacles started stinging Mordred and started cooking his clothes/flesh even though most of them didn't touch him at all. Like thousands of little static shocks, the stings coming from the tentacles pumped their victim with several thousand volts of electricity, but their effectiveness was hampered by their brief duration and effective range and area. A large creature like Mordred would not succumb as much as cook so long as he kept the tentacles off of him. However, the task of keeping them off as he approached had become nearly impossible. There didn't seem to be an end to the Jellyfish's appendages and Mordred was no swordsman. He could not advance under the pressure, but he couldn't back up either. It would only become worse once the Jelly could see again and start enacting more cunning tactics. Mordred's movements started to slow. His limbs were starting to go numb with the countless stings. Mairu's attacks effectively drew the creatures attention however. The fox-boy was considerably faster and more agile than the gecko-man even with the static discharges coming form the Jellyfish. The pressure off Mordred even a little was enough. His body started to swell and his clothes stretched and discolored. Mordred's movements slowed even further, but he seemed less effected by the barrage of attacks against him. Additionally, as he stopped attacking as much as Mairu, the Jellyfish gave him less and less attention. It was then Mordred killed the energy to his katana and proceeded to walk toward the core. Tech and LP The tentacles were coming after Mairu more and more no matter how many stings he braved and limbs he severed. Unlike an octopus or squid, the jellyfish tentacles didn't have any suckers attached to them, just several million hair-like structures that struck out to deliver an electrical shock based on proximity. Mairu would have been able to notice Mordred on the other side wading through the tangled mess that that the beach had become while sheathing his weapon. That's when his fist became swollen and spikey looking before he smashed it into the side of the Jelly's body. tech and lp The Jellyfish's core recoiled violently as it was ripped free of its rocky base and sent airborne over the ocean. Purple goo and rope-like arms trailed after it before it splashed into the sea. Only thing left of it on the beach was countless spasming pieces in the sands and the goo that dribbled on the rocky outcropping. Some of the goo had gotten on Mordred and his fist was covered in it. He didn't wipe it off immediately since it seemed to have a soothing effect on his burns which had become quite expansive but not deep. Despite Mordred's covered face, it was not hard to tell he was feeling more at ease, although fatigued. He sat on the rocky outcropping to catch his breath. The sun would be setting soon. Elizabeth peeked through open fingers while her hands hid most of her face. Was it over? |

Mairu shivered in fear once more as he noticed the creature was giving him a wary look once more, the fox boy halting his path with a gulp. It was getting very angry, and probably desperate too. If he wasn't careful, he could end up seriously hurt by all this. After that moment, however, the child gave himself a nod of surety, knowing he had to do this. If he couldn't beat some sandy beach monster, what hope did he have against some real bad guys? Swallowing his fear and seeing his partner in this fight make some progress, Mairu grit his teeth as he ran forward himself, dodging and ducking as much as he could, clawing away and away mindlessly. He felt odd doing this, being so violent... like he could do more. Like there was something inside of him, ready to let loose, scraping at some door until, finally it would burst open and- A loud shock sent Mairu to the floor in surprise, looking ahead to see his now far heavier set lizard friend dealing a heavy blow to the tentacled monster and sending it off and away. Mairu sat there a few moments, breathing heavily from exertion with writhing tentacles all around. It looked like they'd pulled through and kept their promise, the tyke getting up and dusting himself off as thoughts of a violent beast within slowly wiled away to the back of his mind. Turning to the cloaked and now bulky Mordred, the tyke waddled over and extended his hand for a shake as he declared, "Wow, you're pretty good! Swords make things gross, but it was kinda fun to run around a bit! And seein how you punched him was way way way cool!" Abruptly, the boy remembered they'd been charged with a task by someone, turning his head to the treeline before he raised his hand and yelled out to the small girl, "Elisabeth! It's safe now! You can come get your stuff!" While Mairu waved, however, he spotted a somewhat smaller slice of the tentacles left over, deciding to bend over and gather it as a sample. Maybe he could learn a thing or two about its medicinal properties if he took it to the island's resident physician... Tech and LP

techs lp Elizabeth peeked out through her fingers, sniffed, and nodded her head determined. She stopped squatting and shielding herself with her knees to run across the beach to the rocks where her treasures were. The rocks and Mordred were covered in the goo. Mordred was in the process of ripping off some of the layers of dead flesh that had took the shocks of the jellyfish for him. The skin was blackened in areas and smelled strongly in a typically revolting manner. Mordred's bandaged face didn't grimace. Less because it couldn't and more because he'd down this countless times and his hands moved with a deft precision. Some birds and crustaceans were already coming out to pick at Mordred's leftovers that were strewn about in the sands around him. Elizabeth was visibly shaken and hesitated to move any closer. Mordred looked over to her with gecko eyes, and despite the coming darkness, he saw in perfect color the little girls apprehension. His eyes seemed saddened, but there wasn't much more to his face to properly express what he truly felt. Understandingly, he stood gave Elizabeth and the outcropping space. She hesitantly moved in while keeping an eye on him for a moment before going after her things that had been hidden in a weathered space in the rock. The babbles she produced seemed of little significance, but her eyes lit up and watered some as she turned to Mairu and Mordred "Thank you so much!" She then bowed humbly at the waist with great sincerity. While the efforts of the 2 men didn't seem like much, it meant the world to the helpless. Mordred's attention was on the water however. He thought he saw something shimmering or glowing below the water's surface. Hard to tell though and would remain so while there was still daylight. Mairu would have the opportunity to notice it too if he looked to the water. Walking back was best done while there was still light, so Mordred would insist the group head back. "You did good, kid," Mordred complimented Mairu in an awkward way before he shivered. Stripped of his layers, he was much lighter, but seemed chilled. His shirt wasn't thick enough perhaps, but the weather was still comfortably warm to anyone normal. |

Mairu had to admit that on the list of odd things he'd seen in his relatively exciting, yet fairly short, life, a man shedding his reptilian skin was among the top few that came to mind. It seemed Elizabeth was of the same mind, the fox more intrigued than anything, and even egged her on with a few waves of his hand as a signal that it was okay to approach. He supposed he could understand her apprehension, having just seen the duo skewer a beast and its very remains littering the beach around them, even if it had gotten away alive... or maybe that's why she was afraid. In either case, the girl was fast to join them on the beach, digging through her hiding place as Mairu looked over to his partner in all this. The fox hadn't caught his name, but he was still deeply impressed by both his skill and his heart in all this, actually having gone out of his way to help the two kids on their adventure. Noticing the man seemed a tad cold, wondering if perhaps the seaside breeze and the good was chilling him a tad, the fox waddled over to his new friend, a plan in mind. "No problem!" Mairu yelled back to Elizabeth, the tyke adding a small wave as she bowed to the duo, happy that even though he was a million miles away from home, he still had a chance at being a hero. The man gave praise to Mairu, the young fox boy beaming up at his partner in heroics for a few moments before he responded, "Not as good as you though! You had the sword and it went "wghssh!" and the squid went "aah!" and then you were like "bcch!"" The boy declared, relaying passed events through over dramatic actions and sound effects before giggling to himself. Seeing the man still cold, Mair repeated an earlier action by offering the man his bushy tails for cover, choosing to lead the way as he declared, "C'mon! Let's go to the doctor and see if he can figure out what this goop is! Maybe we can use it to make people feel better! Oh, you didn't tell me your name yet, Mr..." From whatever the man said, the boy would nod happily, leading the way as he held back his pace a bit so that the chilly lizard man could make use of his tails for warmth. It had been a short adventure, all things considered, but one no less eventful. [exit] |

The creases in the corners of Mordred's eyes lessened and his eye shape shifted from an apprehensive gaze to an amused one. While the bandages on his face prevented Mairu from seeing a smile, Mordred's mood and burdens seemed to have lightened. "I'm Mordred." Mordred then forcefully removed some of his flesh to create a water tight sack for the goo to be transported in. With the exception of some blood and other fluids, the sack was clean and sturdy enough to last until a more permanent container could be used. The fighting done, the treasures recovered, and away from the beach, Mordred relaxed as they walked back to town with the setting sun. Finding himself some more clothes and a quieter place to think for the evening, Mordred was a lot more comfortable in a cloak sitting on a bench in one of the many streets. His eyes stared off into the big expanse of the night sky. Compared to what he had been doing up till then, this was a vacation. It was his time to rejuvenate both body and soul.
