The plum-haired woman was aware of the somewhat tenuous situation from whence Kaneda came, but she had opted not to ask too many questions about it when Mercutio asked her for help. And since that day, she had rarely been around the Iles of Elysium when her friend was. It had slipped by and she was never able to actually ask him about the circumstances that led up to her patient’s injuries, and she was unsure of why there was a feeling that word couldn’t reach the outside world.

It was obvious; from both the way that Kaneda had asked about these things, and the general vibe she received from these islands. She knew Mercutio well, and she also knew that he rarely did things without clear conviction, so there would indeed be a reason why there was this insistence of secrecy around what had happened beforehand. All she was able to draw from it was that it was connected in some way to Africa, but… that was as far as she had gotten in her deductions about the whole mess.

Nevertheless, her patient’s surprise following the statement that she could speak the island’s overseer about things made her chuckle. She guessed that something about Mercutio made him rather unapproachable to most people; almost scary.

Needless to say, she had never really felt that towards the man.

“He isn’t an unreasonable man, you know. I’m unsure of where everyone gets this impression.” Eve laughed softly, head tilting to the side somewhat as she considered it. She had first met with him properly during the Heroics Exams, and before that she had saved the life of a student of his, too; albeit everything was a little rushed in that scenario too. Following him aiding her in the Exams and therefore the acquisition of her License, she made the effort to try and stay in contact with the man and try to call him a ‘friend’. His strength was to be admired, but she wasn’t scared of him. “Mercutio likely has a reason for not having spoken about things to me beforehand, and why there is a general feeling of secrecy around here; something preventing you from leaving. If I can learn more, I have no doubt that I’ll be able to negotiate for you to come home with me.” She stated with clear confidence now.

With that said, she would have to make a special effort to seek out Mercutio… wherever he was. It was difficult to know whether he was on the islands or not, after all. That being said, she was resolute now and her mind was made up. She would find where her friend was and have a very long-overdue conversation with him before she went back to Japan, and hopefully, she would be taking Kaneda with her.

The subject shifted again, however, as she drew attention to the fact that now was the time to ask any questions about… well, anything. Kaneda regained his focus and started to talk about his quirk beginning to act peculiar, showing her a miniature little tornado on his outstretched palm. Indeed, she hadn’t yet seen the boy’s quirk and its abilities due to his condition and the focus of his rehabilitation not exactly relating to this aspect of him. Apparently, his quirk gave him the ability to absorb airborne elements before compressing them and releasing them from his palms, specifically. What had changed was when he interacted with physical mass.

He demonstrated with the vase at the centre of their table, and the object began to disintegrate instead of simply sticking to his hand. How unusual… his quirk’s function had altered in a rather drastic way. Kaneda asked if this was due to his nerves and such, and Eve slowly started shaking her head as her expression grew suitably more focused and thoughtful.

“There might be a correlation between this change in your quirk and the damages to your nervous system, but… our abilities are constantly shifting and changing throughout our lives.” She watched the fragments of the vase, and then shifted her gaze back to her patient. “Although I’ve studied quirks for many years, I’ve found time and time again that there is no exact science, rhyme or reason to them.” She smiled, brushing some stray plum locks behind her ear as she crossed one leg over the other underneath the table.

“Oftentimes, a change such as that will occur within our quirk when faced with a perilous or life-altering situation due to the evolutionary factor within our abilities. That, or such changes can also happen following a spike in somebody’s mastery and understanding of their quirk.” Resting her elbows on the table, she upturned both of her hands as they became bathed in a rich orange energy. “For example, I used to believe that my quirk could only react to outside kinetic forces. Since training and improving myself, I’ve since found out that my own body is filled with energy of this kind naturally. It’s difficult to pinpoint whether that was always the case, or whether my skills evolved and therefore, so did my quirk.”

The energy coating her hands dispersed down her arms once again in a flash, a small smile beginning to creep onto her face; one of mystery, and difficult to pinpoint what the smile actually meant. “Depending on how you are feeling… maybe we can head outside and learn the extents of your quirk’s change? There’s nothing quite like learning through hands-on experience when it comes to a quirk.”

He listened as Eve instructed him on the many waves a quirk could change and evolve, nodding as she spoke. "Right. Everything changes. Everything grows." He spoke, resting his hands on the table. "Even me." He thought. Perhaps his quirk was growing in a way that had happened with his previous ailment. Before, he felt trapped, like he was falling into some kind of endless black void. Maybe his quirk had taken that feeling of being compressed, and brought it to life. He would look at his hand, moving it around, finally clenching it tight as Eve mentioned about going outside to test it. Nodding once more, he would stand to his feet, stretching.

"Right. Outside is a good idea. Maybe I can use this to my advantage."

The mind well and truly boggled when it came to quirks and what science they followed, if any, in their development.

Upon giving a few hypothetical scenarios for why Kaneda’s quirk had changed, she pointed out that the best way to see these changes was by putting them into practise and they should probably head outside to see what could be done and learnt in this way. Her patient affirmed that this was a good idea, and she smiled as she got up from the dining table with a sense of urgency. Quirks were a source of fascination for her, and her enjoyment of combat could never be underestimated, either. That, and it would be good for Kaneda to stretch his legs properly and start cleaning off the metaphorical cobwebs that he’d likely have built up from inactivity.

Quirks were like muscles, and it was important to exercise them often else they fall into disuse. Being unable to move for a long while would mean that everything would fall into this category; especially quirks and abilities. Honestly, it would be killing many metaphorical birds with imaginary stones if there was some time spend to analyse Kaneda’s quirk and its changes.

She’d gesture for her patient to follow, but she doubted that he’d need much prompting. He had been off wandering the islands for some time now since recovering, and she knew that he often seemed keen to get outside in the fresh air. The constant tropical sort of climate on these isles made it pleasant weather; currently not too humid, due to the time of day. It was the perfect time to get some exercise done, she thought as she exited Kame House and stepped out onto the sandy shores surrounding them.

“Is it possible for you to use your quirk in its normal function, too?” She asked as she walked across the sands, slipping somewhat in her flip-flops as she did so. Darn, beaches were so alien to her. Before long she stopped a good way away from the house/ small medical bay, and faced her patient as he exited the building; her back to the ocean which quietly swelled and ebbed behind her. “Try working on differentiating between this new part of the quirk, and what you could do before. Maybe there is some kind of separating factor for both abilities.” She suggested, unable to help feeling interested about the control that Kaneda would have over his quirk now.

Would he be able to separate the quirk into its different exhibited functions? Would he still be able to absorb air as he previously had? Or would that void-like substance be created every time, now?

Stepping outside, Kaneda took a deep breath of the ocean air, letting out an exaggerated "Ahhhh." As he stepped into the sunlight. He hadn't realized it until he was outside in the sunlight, but spending the last few months mainly inside had caused him to look even more pale than before, the teen taking a look at his arms once he was outside. He grumbled something about needing some sun tan lotion, but shook his head, throwing a grin back onto his face. Slipping off his shoes, he enjoyed feeling the sand between his toes when he could, a feeling he had taken for granted when his body was broken and unusable. Now, it was something of a guilty pleasure. Taking a few quickened steps to get ahead of Eve, he stretched his shoulders, rotating his left arm while his right arm reinforced it and vice versa, making sure all the kinks were out of the way. The last thing he wanted was to cramp up while demonstrating his quirks abilities in front of the Doctor.

Eve asked him if he could still use his quirks normal abilities, causing him to stop stretching.
"Honestly, that's a good question. I haven't even tried to differentiate between the two. Let's see." He would say, turning his back to Eve and face the water. Taking a deep breath in, he slid his right foot back in the sand to brace himself, extending his left arm out and placing his free hand on his bicep to brace it. He felt the familiar warmness of his blood rushing into his arm that accompanied when his quirk activated, and like a tornado, sand, rocks and water in front of him began to quickly suck up into his arm. His range had increased dramatically since he had truly used his quirk last, which was the first thing he noticed. Before, he had a range of close to 5 meters in front of him, but now, the 15 meters in front of him became a typhoon as it was absorbed. Clenching his fist once he was finished, he would breathe out, trying to blow it outward, but to no avail.

"Damnit. Hold on..." He would muttered, closing his eyes.

"Focus."

He would extend his arm out once again in the same fashion as before, inhaling deeply.

"Focus."

The sand and water would pick up again, faster this time, his palm inhaling everything in front of it.

"Focus..." He would say out loud this time, opening his eyes. Straining his arm, almost as if he were pushing using innate muscles he hadn't use before, a furious mix of sand and water would rocket out of his palm in once giant, condensed blast, akin to a shotgun blast, but also knocking Kaneda onto his butt, into the sand. He would blink momentarily as he landed, his hands digging into the sand to catch himself, but would then bring them up, looking at them, smiling.
"I guess I can still use it normally! However, I don't remember it being that strong. Guess I can't complain too much." He would joke, standing up to face Eve. "Guess I just don't know my own strength, ha!" He would laugh, grinning at the doctor. To be honest, using his quirk again gave him a rush he hadn't felt in forever. It felt good to really unleash and feel the full effect of it. However, his shoulder was on fire. It almost felt like when he first started using his quirk, so many years ago, training them to be able to withstand the blast. Suddenly, Kaneda had an idea.

While he had been resting, he had theorized an attack using condensed air. Sure, he could unleash it in a giant blast, but he felt as if his control over his quirk had matured, giving way to new opportunities. He wanted to use his quirk to it's FULL extent. Sucking in air in both of his palms, he would take a few extra steps forward, jumping up into the air, and then releasing the blasts at the ground beneath him. Quickly, Kaneda's body flew into the air, the teen twisting, spinning in air. Quickly, he would compress air again, but instead of letting it out in a blast, he would extend his index and middle finger outward. Throwing his arm like he was throwing a baseball underhanded, he would throttle the air he had absorbed, giving it a thin, blade-like form. It would cut through the air, a sharp blade of wind flowing forward, into the water, cutting into it, then exploding shortly after impact. For a split second, he felt victorious, but only before he realized that he was 15 meters in the air, over the water. Panicking, he dropped downwards, into the water, soaking himself wet. Coming back to the surface, he would spit out a mouthful of water, climbing back onto the shoreline.

"That... wasn't supposed to happen." He said, feeling kind of embarrassed about showing off. "But at least now I can say I've taken two showers today..."

Although under normal circumstances, Eve was a woman who loved the colder months and everything that came with it, she did appreciate warmer climates as well. She just wasn’t as accustomed to them, which was ironic, considering that she grew up in the South of France, where there was a consistent warm temperature in the summer and springtime due to its famous vineyards. She planted herself on the sand and looked back at her patient, but soon found herself to be turning and watching as he walked past her and towards the ocean a little more. Her arms folded over her chest as she asked a question about whether he was able to switch between his quirk functions or not, and this reminded her that… she hadn’t removed her lab coat.

No wonder she was quite warm.
Outfit under the Lab Coat

With a small blush coating her cheeks for her forgetfulness, she slipped the coat off and folded it aside on a nearby rock, before pretending that such a thing didn’t happen. Indeed, as she expected, Kaneda wasn’t aware of whether he could toggle the two distinct functions of his quirk or not. And so, he turned towards the water to give it a try. Without wanting to put any pressure or embarrassment on the boy, she watched with an inquisitive and interested look on her face as he braced himself somewhat.

He expelled a burst of air from his extended arm, and materials started to become absorbed into this air while being pulled towards him. The range he demonstrated was impressive, and he seemed to be surprised by it as well. Wind whipped Eve’s short locks back off her face as she watched, fascinated by the process and obvious improvement in the boy’s abilities. For whatever reason, his quirk had adapted to be stronger than before… even as he lay immobile. Absolutely amazing. Human beings and their infinite resilience continued to surprise her, a small smile forming on her lips as she watched Kaneda experiment and try to function his quirk in different manners.

He seemed frustrated by his inability to expel the materials he had absorbed from the blast of wind, and focused intently on the task at hand. She leaned forward slightly as she watched the volume of materials whirl in the tornado-like phenomenon in front of her patient, observing the pattern and switching her attention to the concentration painted on Kaneda’s face. What followed was a large expulsion of the water and air outwards, something akin to a blast from a pressurised gun or the like, which knocked the youth onto his backside. The plum-haired woman smiled and rearranged her hair, turning to face the downed boy who was quick to get up again with obvious enthusiasm on his face. He concluded with that practise that he was still able to use his quirk as he had once been able, but with more strength and propulsion than he had been able to muster before. It was nice to see him in such high spirits; being outdoors and active again had done wonders for his positivity, she realised.

“A quirk is like a muscle, too. It would make sense that you need to exercise it more to become used to its power again, after a long period of disuse.” She explained with a nod of her head, holding up a hand with extended index finger to illustrate her point further with this gesture. “That aside… it’s quite unusual that your capabilities have expanded while you’ve been bed-ridden.” She pointed out, hand raising to cup her chin thoughtfully as she kept trying to come up with hypotheses for why this might be the case. Thus far, she was coming up empty.

Her patient was intent to use his time practising to the fullest, and he started to play around with mobility as he blasted himself skywards. Eve shaded her eyes from the sun as she looked up at the flying youth, and observed as he created a sort of ‘blade’ from the air around him, which he proceeded to throw into the water and cause a small explosion in the waves from the pressure. Impressive. Only, he didn’t seem to have thought about how he was going to stop himself from falling. As such, when he tumbled down into the water with a tremendous splash, she couldn’t help chuckling and hiding her mouth somewhat behind her hand politely when he surfaced. He was soon back on the shore and soaking wet, clearly embarrassed at his small misjudgement which had resulted in this situation.

“That’s alright. Next time, think about how you can compress air to get yourself down, hm?” She offered by way of suggestion, smiling at him and plucking some stray seaweed out of his hair with a giggle. “Experimenting is all about growth, so don’t be embarrassed about failing just now. Keep at it. Is there anything else you would like to try that I can help with?”

Eve offered some words of advice, how a quirk is like a muscle, but noting how unusual it was that he had grown STRONGER after being bedridden, instead of weaker. He couldn't help but chalk that up to his own tenacity, but he kept quiet, simply grinning at her.

"Guess I can't complain too much, can I?" He joked, scratching the back of his head. She then asked if there was anything else he needed help with, Kaneda pausing, putting his finger to his chin, then shaking his head.
"Eve-senpai, you have done so much for me already. I can't thank you enough. I think... I think I'm good. I think I'm ready." He would say. Ready for what, he wasn't entirely sure, but he knew he would figure it out as it came. He would move his arms forward, his palms facing his own body, quickly sucking in the air and water that covered his body, quickly drying himself off. Stepping over to Eve, he would bow to her, then once raised up, would give her a hug.

"Thank you for not giving up on me." He would say, releasing his hug and taking a step back.
"At this rate, I'll be able to try out for UA again in no time."

The plum-haired woman chuckled softly as Kaneda joked somewhat about his sudden spike in capability, in spite of being bed-ridden for the past month at least. Indeed, it wasn’t something to complain about! It would require a lot of perseverance and training to master the newer parts of what his quirk had evolved to include, but she was sure that he already knew that.

Contrary to popular belief, she didn’t wish to lecture people too much.

She offered to see if there was anything else she could help with and proceeded to smile kindly at the youth, having moved over to where he was stood near the water’s edge. Her patient seemed to think briefly before addressing her as ‘senpai’ and claiming that she had already done so much for him. Eve blinked somewhat owlishly, and a blush of gratitude and warmth found its way to her face; not quite knowing how to handle herself in the face of such heartfelt compliments. He thanked her and said that he was ready, and although he didn’t elaborate on what this specifically was, she felt it from him. Whatever he wanted to do from this point on… he had the tools and determination to do so.

A thought crossed her mind and she parted her lips, making a motion to speak, but those words quickly left her as a surprise bow followed by an embrace took her off guard. Eve smiled and closed her eyes after a brief moment of rigidity took over her body, due to the suddenness of the familiar gesture, and fluidly moved to wrap her arms around the boy’s back in a reciprocated hug. Against her better judgement and normal rock solid control of her emotions, she felt a few tears of joy prick the backs of her eyes when Kaneda thanked her for not giving up on him, and a small lump rose at the back of her throat as she felt herself becoming literally speechless.

“While I draw breath and can be here… I will not give up on you, Kaneda, um…” She paused, a blush overtaking her cheeks with a rosy red hue while averting her gaze from the boy when he let go of her, “kouhai…”

The volume was soft; almost inaudible, but she said it. Although the boy had been her patient for so long, she felt a connection with him that was now beyond that somewhat removed relationship. He looked up to her as an inspiration, an elder to follow and aspire to be, and in turn, she looked to him and saw so much raw, untapped potential as well as a pure and honest heart. So much of that could have been destroyed, should her treatments have failed. She was immeasurably grateful for this not being the case.

She went back to smiling at mention of Kaneda’s sights being set upon U.A., and she nodded her head in an encouraging manner. “I have no doubt that you will do immeasurably well in the exams this time around! You have learnt a lot compared to when you first tried, and it is that knowledge and experience that will carry you forth. Your unrelenting spirit… it will definitely serve you well.” Eve placed a hand on the youth’s shoulder and squeezed it tight, closing her eyes to accommodate for the wide smile that spread across her face.

“Come on now! First things first; let us inquire about journeying back to Japan, before we dream of U.A.”

A satisfying conclusion to the previous thread. Not many can say they've fully healed a completely crippled man, and very few can say they were that crippled man. The inner monologues between both characters, alongside the flashbacks really sets this apart from other threads. You can tell a lot of care and thought were put into not only the thread, but the characters' histories as well.

Enjoy the spoils, because I really enjoyed the thread.
