The weight of a promise to Genevieve Delacroix was very heavy.

Although one could argue that words were just air and therefore didn’t mean much, she felt very strongly about promises and how much those meant between the people from whence they forged. When she promised to do something, she would follow through on that no matter how painful the outcome was. She knew first-hand just how damaging some of these promises could be, but her oath and her word were very important. No matter what, she wouldn’t go back on something like that; especially when it brought about hope.

On a certain small isle, she had adamantly assured a crippled boy that she would heal him and make him better in spite of her inhibitions with the operation. She had never treated paralysis in such a severe case before, and so, she couldn’t help but have an edge of scepticism even in regard to her own words. Nevertheless, she had sworn that she would do something, and she was a woman who kept her promises no matter the cost.

The boy in question, Kaneda, had his hope restored when she uttered those words to him. She had seen the power in them, and the way in which he started to fight back against his condition. Her first treatment had been a surprise for her. Over the days that followed, he started to regain feeling and movement in parts of his body. She was able to stay around on the isle of Mia, named after her best friend, in order to see his progress and monitor his rehabilitation to some degree. Utilising her own first-hand knowledge of getting back on ones’ feet after horrific injury, the pair of them started to make some progress. It was slow-going, as one may expect, but Kaneda’s nervous system started to regrow in places and heal itself with repeated processes that Eve carried out, and general rehabilitation programmes.

By the end of her observations in regard to this initial healing process, he had regained control of the right side of his body with continued numbness in the left. In later rehabilitation sessions, he reported getting some semblance of feeling back into his left leg so that he could stand unsupported for short periods of time. Most of the time, he would have to utilise crutches of some kind to get around, but this was massive progress from where he had been weeks earlier.

After finalising the results of her initial major procedure, Eve had to return to Japan in order to lead her life as Green Grit of Spectrum. She embarked on some missions with her teammates, all the while conscious of leaving her patient untended…

“I swear on my life that I will save you.”

Those words that she used to promise Kaneda of his recovery, of managing to somehow accomplish what many would view to be impossible, continued to rattle within her head throughout her relatively short time away. Before long, with a small quiet lull in missions, she was begging her boss Red Justice to give her some time to return to Elysium and finish what she started. It was only right, after all Kaneda had been through.

In her stay beforehand, the two of them had gotten to know each other rather well indeed, as one may imagine of spending long hours of the day together. She felt a personal connection with the youth, and a responsibility to him as a medical professional to do everything in her power to help him recover in his entirety. He might never be the same as he was before, but she made her mission to ensure that it was pretty darn close and he would be able to take hold of his own life again.

Two weeks after she left the youth on Elysium (and giving strict orders to the island doctor in her absence), she found herself back there in the anime reference of a house, having used the U.A. teleportation probe in order to travel. Reaching the island by normal means was a bit of an impossibility, after all, and Mercutio had given her permission to have access to the islands whenever she wished; especially since she was in the process of treating Kaneda. She immediately headed downstairs, practised in the route she needed to take now, and made her way into the basement-like medical ward that Kame House offered.

Opposite her now was her patient’s bed, and she stood with a small yet notably apologetic smile on her face as she looked in the boy’s direction. “I’m sorry to have been away for so long! But I’m back now.” She greeted Kaneda warmly, and moved across the room to the boy’s bedside while shedding her outdoor jacket and donning a white medical coat in one well-practised motion. “How have you been? You must update me on everything that’s happened!” Eve smiled and brushed her choppily cut plum locks out of her eyes, slipping on a pair of thin reading glasses that she kept in the pocket of this particular white coat.

Kaneda had been engrossed in a book about a wizard and a school, oddly reminisce of UA, when the good doctor returned to him. Perched on his bed, his back against the bed, his good leg bent and his bad one laid out, he held the book in one hand, setting in his lap to turn the pages. It was a good read, but he had been down here for a few weeks now and had breezed through the entire series in no time. When Eve entered the ward, Kaneda quickly perked up at her sight and smiled. Despite all the shitty events that he had been in, she at least was a beacon of hope for things to come. Setting the book down, he would wave at her, moving to the edge of the bed, standing up with relatively no trouble. His left arm would hang at his side, however, still with zero use. It had been annoying at first, but he was quickly learning how to cope with it.

"Doctor! Long time no see!" He would shout, smiling from ear to ear. Perhaps she came with good news for him. She started off by apologizing to him for being away for so long, Kaneda only shaking his head, waving his right hand as if to reassure her.
"Oh, no, it's okay! Don't apologize. You've got a life to live, after all." He would say, chuckling. She would then asked him how he had been and asked for an update on everything that had happened. He would first wave to his standing form.

"I've been following the rehabilitation program you designed for me. It's definitely helping. Check it out. No crutches!" He would practically shout, taking a step towards her, only wincing in pain once. "Don't expect me to be running any marathons anytime soon though." He would joke, sitting back down on the bed.

"Things have been, uhh... okay, I suppose." He would tell her, leaning back, resting his elbows on the bed. "I got into a bit of trouble and got moved down here instead of being in the main hospital, so social interaction has been a little on the lacking. On the bright side, I've been practicing my english." He would say the very last sentence in nearly fluent english, his Japanese accent showing through. Sighing, he would stretch his neck slightly before speaking again. "How about you, Eve-sempai? How was your trip to err... Wherever it was you went? I'm guessing since you're back, it's time for a new surgery, huh?"

Kaneda purposely chose not to speak about the events with Zeak and the monster in the previous hospital, not wanting to touch on it. He didn't know how to approach it, to be honest, and had been laying low until he could figure something out. Part of him wanting to talk to Mercutio about it, but he didn't have many options. First thing first, he needed to be able to walk and fight again. Perhaps the doctor would also be able to help him get off this island and get home. One could only hope.

Her eyes lit up at the enthusiasm with which she was greeted by her patient, and Eve smiled warmly as she watched the boy get up from his bed with all but no hesitation. This was the sight of good progress since she had been working with him, and it made her feel relieved to see him getting accustomed to his current situation. It was far from ideal or what he wanted, but she was impressed to see that he was making the right moves to overcoming it. Positive and determined mind-sets were the key to conquering something such as this, after all.

At his comment of her having a life to lead of her own, she laughed gently as she stopped in front of him. As was the case with many people, she stood quite a deal shorter than him, but this rarely seemed to register in her mind anymore. “But of course! My main priority is unchanged, however; I’m going to help you to a full recovery.” She claimed with a resolute tone of voice, nodding firmly with her sapphire blue eyes glittering somewhat behind her thin glasses.

After this, she asked about what had happened since she was last here. The first major thing was the fact that Kaneda had been continuing with his rehabilitation programme, hence his ability to stand without much difficulty, and even his ability to walk. Eve’s expression brightened considerably at the boy’s excitement about his progress, and she felt all kinds of relieved that the exercises and dietary guidelines she laid out for him were working. His joke made her chuckle lightly, and she followed him to take a seat on his bed also. “I’m so pleased to see you in such high spirits. And your recovery is going so well! You’ve been going from strength to strength, Kaneda.” At her latter comment, she lightly placed a hand on his right shoulder with a kind and genuine smile spreading on her face. This whole process had been one of learning for her as well, and she had been nervous on every step of the journey. Nevertheless, she had remained positive throughout, and it made her feel so much more at ease to see her patient was keeping his spirits high and doing his utmost to recover as well. He had confidence in her and her abilities, and so she would do the same.

He continued to talk about how the previous couple of weeks had gone, and he said that they had been… ‘okay’, complete with hesitation. This made Eve raise an eyebrow as she looked at the youth, folding her hands together atop her knees as she listened. Apparently he had gotten into trouble in the main hospital which had been established on the island, and he had been moved back down here away from the others. As such, social interaction had been on the scarce side.

She could see that Kaneda didn’t really want to talk about what trouble he got into, and so Eve decided not to pry. Instead, she smiled when he demonstrated his practised English. Because she was multi-lingual, she often forgot which language she spoke in; she merely responded to whatever language she heard in a lot of cases. She spoke with Kaneda in Japanese, and he had been learning English in his spare time… which he had rather a lot of, what with being bed-ridden for the majority of the day.

“Your English has improved a lot; very good pronunciation.” She pointed out with a smile, holding up her index finger to punctuate this point. “Well, regardless of what happened in the hospital, I’m very glad to see that your rehabilitation has continued to go well and you’ve had time to improve on your language skills.” She commented with clear warmth in her tone, tilting her head to the side slightly with her ever-present smile clearly tugging at the corners of her mouth. Eve was never one for over-the-top facial expressions, but her face and eyes were very expressive in and of themselves. Her smiles were often quite muted but genuine, and there was a sort of twinkling present in her deep blue orbs whenever she was around people she felt comfortable with which betrayed that ease within her.

The question was turned back on her, and being called ‘senpai’ made the plum-haired girl blush and laugh softly. “Oh, I returned to Tokyo for a little while! I’m studying medicine at Tokyo University’s magnificent science and medical department, and had a few assignments to finalise.” A sheen of something very bright overtook her eyes after she revealed where she had been (which wasn’t a complete lie), and she cleared her throat to answer the second question posed by her patient.

“If my studies are correct… one more surgery and an adjustment in rehabilitation will see you back to full strength.”

She clenched both hands into determined fists with a firm nod as she looked at Kaneda. This was all theory-based, but she couldn’t allow him to know that. He believed in her abilities and he looked up to her! Eve couldn’t let him down, no matter what. And thus, this final stretch absolutely had to work.

“Now, lay yourself down and we’ll get started.” The medical professional gently urged him and flashed a compassionate yet determined smile as she got to her feet.

As Kaneda explained spoke on all his points, his eyes and mood would light up, almost to match hers, the doctor's inspiration in her patient something that Kaneda had never experienced before. He wondered if everyone else she tended after experienced this same sense of hope, but he figured of course, it wasn't just her ability to heal, but also to give a sense of hope and pride, that they would pull through. Kaneda knew that he would grow stronger and learn to fight again, and that maybe there was more sense to this than what he realized. Losing the exams, the events of Africa, learning to move his body again.. All were walls put in his way meant to break him down, to test him, to learn how far he would go, how much he had to lose, pride, sense of self... but he was persevering.

He no longer cared what the world had to say about being a hero and what made someone into the pinnacle of hope that humanity needed. He had seen the thin grey line that some rarely see, the darker side of the heroes of the world, the bloodshed that had been wrought, the order of the death of the orphan by, different tragedies all orchestrated by a single source, the swift and fierce Mercutio, the Crimsoul. Kaneda had never seen such a fierceful and powerful hero, capable of manipulating pure energy itself. He saw thousands die by his hand alone. But the death of the orphan saw one die by his word. People would literally kill for this man, someone who the world revered. Kaneda was scared as hell of him, and despite all of this, kind of respected him. He understood the reasoning, kill a few to save a million, but death was needed to be avoided. Or did it? The value of human life had been blurred by the teen, and for awhile, he wondered if it was worth it, but the Doctor restoring hope in him kept him in the light.

Hesitantly, he would nod to her, moving his books to the side table, moving his other leg onto the bed fully, and leaning back. He was curious as to how she fixed him, since he was out of it before, but wasn't too worried about it now. As long as it worked, that's all that mattered, right? He trusted her. He would rest his back on his bed, his head on his pillow. Taking a deep breath, he would close his eyes, ready for what was next.

Kindness could go a long way sometimes, when it came to the difficult things.

The plum-haired woman had slowly been learning that Heroism wasn’t just the ability to stand up against danger and save people with brute force. What she was doing, what she wanted to do, was reach Heroics into the lives of those who had no hope. The practise of medicine was often overlooked as being an afterthought, but there were more and more people who ended up in need of medical care following horrific events caused by Villain attacks, or even Heroic rescues. It was in this field that Eve found the most solace, and felt the closest to those she was helping.

Aiding Kaneda get back on his feet had been a learning process for her. In a lot of ways, she saw a lot of herself in his situation; at least, in the way that she lost everything. It was down to her own recklessness, however, and not due to circumstance putting her in that situation. She believed that she could save everybody, and was willing to sacrifice her body, her life, to make sure she could do that. In the process, all she ended up doing was debilitating herself and causing ructions with waves that muddied the pool that was her life and everyone she was involved with. From that experience, being at rock bottom, she had learnt a lot about herself and also what she could do to make it a positive learning curve.

She watched the woman who treated her very carefully, and made sure to learn all she could about how best to repair a body which had been torn back to square one; beyond any and all hope of being restored naturally. For a long time, it was doubtful that she would ever be able to walk properly again, let alone regain the usage of her limbs and the capability she had built herself up to during her time training at U.A. But through the miraculous work of the U.A. nurse, and the rehabilitation which followed, she was back at her full strength. If anything, her physical prowess had soared above anything she had been capable of before the life-shattering incident when her body all but tore itself apart. It was through this pain and anguish that she had learnt everything she could about medicine, and using a healthy mixture of the powerful energy within her and the body’s natural properties to accomplish the impossible.

Above all, the right mind-set was essential, and it seemed that her patient had that in spades.

He had been so positive throughout the whole process, and although he stumbled and struggled at times, he was determined to keep trying and never stopped believing in his ability to recover. Because at the end of the day, what Eve was doing wasn’t anything much of a miracle at all; she was bending her previously destructive quirk into something that could spread kinetic impulses through a body, and stimulate regrowth. Her natural lifeforce and energies, as it were, were perhaps the most ‘magical’ part of the process. Everything else was just science, and giving the body time to recuperate.

What was really driving this boy’s recovery… was himself.

She smiled as she finished explaining where she had been, and then shared the hopeful news with Kaneda. Following her studies into the subject and many a plan written up after a week of little sleep, she was confident that she could bridge that final gap between this interim phase and a full recovery for her patient. Her life experience had been transformed into something that could help others, and teamed with a little more medical knowledge, as well as physical therapy specialism, things were looking positive. Her deep sapphire eyes betrayed a small amount of hesitancy, but her expression remained firm with a kind smile and determination which always found its way to her face when her mind was set on something.

“To be trusted so much… it’s a feeling that truly humbles me.” She mused aloud, rolling up the sleeves on her white lab coat and pushing her glasses further up her nose with a small, swift motion. Although she was technically a medical professional, and what’s more, a Licensed Hero, the admiration that others seemed to have towards her… would never get old, nor would it diminish in importance to her. Eve just hoped that she could continue to deliver on the image that she portrayed to the world; of providing a never-dimming beacon of hope for those who needed to see the light.

Gentle orange hues started to snake down her arms and to her hands, the familiar energy warming through her system as she channelled this mass. Her hands were aglow with this pastel light as she reached forward to place her hands appropriately on Kaneda’s left side. One hand rested on his upper arm, and the other rested on his left leg as she focused on controlling the surge of energy her body was outputting. This outlet of kinetic force always had to be carefully monitored and controlled by her, else it reverted back to its destructive natural state. Very careful control… and absolute concentration.

As she maintained contact with Kaneda’s body, he would feel a rush and somewhat pleasant buzzing sensation fill his body. Of course, with no feeling on his left side, this feeling would originate near his centre and spread through the right side of his body instead, although the healing was focused on his left appendages and the nervous system there. The medic inhaled a deep breath, gently expending another wave of this energy with an extra output of her lifeforce to permeate deep within the nerves’ inner workings; the synapses and the joins between them. She focused on imagining how they might regrow, reform where they had been sizzled away or damaged.

The hope was that this extra expenditure on her part would make the nerve-endings kickstart in their healing.

Closing his eyes, he felt the soften of the pillow slightly resist against him as his cranium lay down upon it, a slight prickle in the back of his neck of the feathers inside. Taking in a deep breath, he calmed himself, not quite sure what to expect next. During the lats surgery, he hadn't been awake, so anything could happen now. What the boy didn't expect, however, the feeling of warmth rising up inside his chest. It was strange, feeling this energy inside him, and at first he didn't know quite what to make of it. It was so odd, rushing in, almost too quickly, snaking inside of him, tingling his finger tips and toes and moving inwards. The best way he could describe it would be like sand gentle brushing against his appendages and the desert sun within his chest itself, which was fitting due to the nature and location of his injuries. Inside his chest, he would feel the warmth begin to spread outward slowly. First to his stomach and his shoulders, the breadth of life beginning already to return to his dead limbs. Nerve endings regrew and rehealed, even stronger than before they were destroyed. Muscle was stimulated with the natural electricity of the nervous system as they snaked outward. Kaneda grimaced slightly, not in pain or uncomfortability, but nervousness. To be given a glimpse of a return to health, it was cruel. Part of him believed it would end here, as his luck had been over these last few months, a cruel reminder that he wasn't getting anywhere. For a moment a frown formed on his lips.

But only for a moment.

Instead, his nervousness would dissipate and be replaced with something else entirely, something that was often only seen in those heroes that Kaneda idolized. Pure courage washed over his features as determination furrowed his brow. He wouldn't accept it. No, this would not be where his story ended, a crippled man, someone who couldn't help himself. No, he was going to get through this. She was going to get him through this. Her words echoed in his mind once again, the promise she had made in their first encounter.

“I swear on my life that I will save you.”

Flashback

He believed in her. She had given him hope and his fathers words had given him courage. The two together were enough to make him fight, to push, to move forward and go head on with getting better. He HAD stared death in the face only to return, and with Eve's help, become stronger than ever. He had to push on, if it meant getting back home to his mother, to his brother. He didn't trust anyone else to keep them safe. He had always been the one to protect them, every since his father passed, and no one else deserved that mantle. The warmth of her quick was moving outward now, he could feel it. His forearms and calves tingled now, and his toes as the extremities began to function again. He could move his toes! Barely, but he could feel it! Fingers! His digits began to wiggle, invigorated by the stimulated nerve endings. He was healing more and more, feeling it return. He moved both hands in unison. Tears began to stream down his cheeks as he was overwhelmed with happiness. The boy sobbing.

"I can feel them! They're moving!" He nearly yelled, overcome with so much emotion that he didn't notice the nurses looking in to see the commotion. He could feel the last synapses reconnected, tissue reform, nerves reattach, regaining full rotation and movement (albeit a little muscle atrophy but nothing that a few weeks of therapy couldn't fix) and clenched his fists. Then, quickly, probably too quick for his newly fixed limbs, he would raise himself up, hugging Eve, sobbing into her lab jacket. She had fixed him. She had completely healed his damage to an extent that no one had thought possible. She had preformed the impossible, giving a total parapalegic full range of motion without the use of cybernetics or other items. She was a healer, and she had preformed her duty better than a miracle. Kaneda was speechless in all but two words, that he muttered over and over again.

"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you."

Small seeds of worry began to plant and take root in the medic’s mind as she worked, continuing to pool her energies and concentration into her task. This was a delicate procedure simply due to the nature of her quirk and how it reacted with her ability to heal; any slip in focus could mean something rather catastrophic indeed. But, more than that, she was concerned about whether or not her efforts would work. Had she done enough to make sure that the damaged nerves would repair? Had the work she had laid down in strengthening his other side paid off?

There were all kinds of factors with doubtful outcomes, and it worried her. Nevertheless, she had no real time to wallow in this doubt because all of her energy was directed into the endeavour of healing Kaneda.

Because she was so engrossed in this undertaking, she wasn’t aware of the effects of her efforts for the initial moments that the boy began to regain feeling in parts of his body when all hope for recovering it seemed lost. Her eyes were closed and she couldn’t see Kaneda beginning to move his fingers and hands in unison, or wiggle his toes. But before long she would know, because the boy began to voice and express his sheer delight that he was able to feel things again. His outcry about his extremities moving gave the medic pause as she worked, slowly and carefully retracting her quirk and opening her eyes slowly. A long, calm breath exhaled from her lips simultaneously as she brought the healing process to a controlled halt.

It had been difficult to describe, but she had been imagining how she could be fixing the torn, frayed nerves as she worked; visualising pulling them back together and cementing them there. Revitalised. Mended. Healing. Those images briefly flashed in her mind as she moved to straighten up, feeling a little drained from the sudden expenditure she had used for the procedure, but her body was halted by a warm embrace from her patient.

Confusion briefly painted her face as she adjusted to this sensation, still feeling somewhat lightheaded. Was that… actually happening? As she slowly looked down at the boy currently clinging to her and sobbing with joy, she spotted his two arms reached up and around her; felt them at her back. Her expression shifted quickly after realising this, and she tightly reciprocated the embrace, but was careful of not causing any damage after she had managed to fix it. Somehow. By some miracle, against every odd stacked against her.

She lightly placed a hand behind the boy’s head and closed her deep sapphire eyes, leaning into the hug and unable to stop a singular tear of joy and relief slipping from the corner of her left eye. Kaneda repeatedly thanked her, his voice somewhat muffled due to his face being buried against her, and it really started to sink into her mind just how much this meant to the boy. Of course, freedom of movement after thinking you could never walk again was something indescribable, but even so… from the time the medic and patient had gotten to know one another, Eve got the impression that there was something else driving the youth. He wanted to get better and be ‘fixed’ more than anything, and it was probably the source of his overwhelming positivity throughout the process; even when things looked their darkest and he experienced relapses in his healing.

“It’s okay.” She spoke gently and reassuringly, lightly ruffling Kaneda’s hair with the hand resting at the back of his head. It was a motherly sort of embrace; not something a doctor would offer a patient whatsoever. “I promised you, Kaneda. I promised that I would make you better. I’m just so relieved and indescribably happy that… I fulfilled that promise.” Her words stayed hushed and soothing in nature, but also filled with a good amount of wonder and disbelief.

She held the embrace for a short while longer; however long the boy needed to express his joyous tears. Afterwards, she’d carefully support under his left arm as she released the hug, and gently moved him to a seated position on the bed. Indeed, he would have usage of his left side once more, but his newly repaired nerve-endings could easily tear and their progress would be taken back to square one. “Now, you need to be careful. It’s just like last time when you had to take things slow for a few days while your body adjusted. Your nervous system is pulling itself back together right now, and it’s very fragile.” Her doctoring side came out with a little bit a firm reprimand for his sudden, reckless movements to hug her earlier, but the smile on her lips said that the embrace and show of gratitude wasn’t something she disliked, either.

Her gaze remained fixed on the boy as he got himself situated, and she held out her left arm in front of herself, underside first, to demonstrate a slow movement of her fingers. She slowly lifted each of her fingers upwards; from pinky, all the way to the thumb. Afterwards, she gestured for him to mimic her actions. “Nice and slowly. I need to see how far and to what extent the nerves have repaired.” She explained, and would then watch if Kaneda did as he was told.

After his fit of emotion subsided, he leaned away from Eve, wiping his tears with the shoulder of his good arm. He apologized quickly, laughing, even as she looked at him a bit scoldingly for moving so fast. Taking a deep breath, he looked at his arm and leg, gently wiggling his toes and fingers, until she gave him commands. Copying her motions, he would nod, holding his previously disabled arm out. Slowly and gently, he would begin to wiggle them again, one by one, but a bit further than he had before. There, now, he could feel it. The tightness of no use after a month, the lack of exercise eroding away his motor functions and muscles equally. He still had a long way to go before he would be combat worthy, but now he wasn't totally useless.

"Like this?" He would ask as he moved his fingers one by one. On his middle finger, he would wince slightly as it moved, the nerves still wound tight.

It was unbelievably heartening to know that her efforts had been successful, but Eve wanted to keep her focus to the important things at hand. She wanted to make sure that her patient didn’t strain himself too much after such a large rush of healing (she would call it surgery, but it was non-obtrusive), because it could take him back to square one, almost. The boy’s nervous system was still repairing itself naturally after being stimulated by her initial procedure, and was therefore a lot more vulnerable to wear and tear than it normally was.

She smiled warmly and patiently at Kaneda as he mimicked her movements after gathering himself somewhat, and she proceeded to make observations of his fingers and the way that he could move them. There was understandable delay between him prompting this movement, and the appendage actually doing the action, and the overall execution of the exercise was a little laboured at points. The boy’s muscles and motor systems in this half of his body had been all but inactive for a long time, and so it was understandable to have some difficulty in performing this task. When he asked if he was doing as she asked, Eve nodded at him encouragingly and stopped shifting her fingers as an indication that he, too, should cease his movement.

“Yes, that’s perfect.” She confirmed verbally, and softly placed a hand on her patient’s shoulder before giving it a gentle squeeze. “I know that movement feels difficult right now, but by the end of this final bout of rehabilitation for your body, you’ll be right as rain.” She assured him, feeling confident of this fact now. Her main concerns had been lying in the procedure itself, as it happens. The various programmes she had given the youth to be doing in her absence had obviously worked wonders for him, with the freedom of movement he had of his right side.

“We’ll get started first thing in the morning. How about some pastries and tea for right now?”

And so, their time together as doctor and patient remained constant. Eve stayed on this small island, named after her best friend, and worked closely with Kaneda to make sure that his recovery was a complete one. While doing so, she also kept tabs on her schoolwork with the newly updated Wi-Fi that she had access to while in Kame House. She was able to devise a full case file for her patient, and show him the progress he had made if ever he forgot just how far he had come.

Spending all but every hour of every day together meant that she felt an even closer bond with the younger boy. She would certainly go as far as to say that she felt as if the pair of them had forged a friendship; perhaps even close to one of siblings (that actually liked one another and didn’t constantly fight, that is).

The daily routine would shift accordingly, but the rehabilitation and reparation programme that Kaneda had been undertaking before was the main base for this bout, too. The first solid week focused on regaining mobility and strength in his left side, and the second week shifted focus to instead get him used to seemingly normal activities all over again. Things such as walking without difficulty, keeping both sides of his body in check, and other aspects became the priority as their time together came to a close.

On the morning of the fifteenth day following the boy’s rehabilitation, Eve was settled down with her laptop in the lower rooms of Kame House. She had brewed fresh coffee and some croissants were fresh out of the oven, filling the whole place with the scent of baking and pastry. Her face was set into an expression of concentration as she tapped away at her keyboard, hard at work at something as usual. Being an early riser, she was always awake at 5am without fail to keep up to speed with her college assignments, and then collating the results of the previous day’s rehabilitation sessions with Kaneda. She was just finishing the former portion of this little routine, reaching for her mug of coffee at the small dining table and suppressing a yawn. Depending on how today progressed, she would be departing later today.

A part of her was loathe to do so, really. She couldn’t help seeing her patient as a sort of younger brother to her now, after such intensive time spent together. Not only had she been helping him recover, but their spare time was spent chatting, learning (she had been teaching him more English and a few other subjects that he wanted to learn about), and just generally unwinding in each other’s company.

Nevertheless, her attention was fully focused on her task for the moment, and was unaware of the time passing 8am, or of any other presence that entered her midst.

Eve stopped her demonstrative gesture, Kaneda opting to do the same, letting his arm fall back to his side. He sat up, gripping the side of his bed with both hands, letting both feet fall onto the cold hospital floor. The chill sent a shiver up both of his legs, his hairs rising, goosebumps forming. It was something odd that he never figured he would have missed, but god had he missed it. He closed his eyes for a moment, smiling. Eve placed her hand on his shoulder affirmingly, a little bit of that inspiration showing through again.

“I know that movement feels difficult right now, but by the end of this final bout of rehabilitation for your body, you’ll be right as rain.”

He would open his eyes, looking at her. He would nod affirmingly at the doctor, his expression virtuous and determined.
"I trust you, Eve-senpai."
“We’ll get started first thing in the morning. How about some pastries and tea for right now?”
Kaneda's grin would widen even further.
"I haven't had anything like that since last time you left!"

Over the days, Kaneda could feel himself growing stronger. With each passing moment, his mind only wandered on possibilities of what he could do once he was stronger. He could run, he could jump, he could fight. He could travel. He could be normal again. No, better than normal. He knew, even before his surgery, that he wasn't going to waste this second chance. He had been on the cusp of death, hanging on by a thread, only to be brought back and thrust into this world with a new lease on life. It wasn't a gift that he would give away so easily, but that also came wit a slew of new problems. As he and Eve spent the next few weeks working on his rehabilitation, daily strength building routines, diagnosis workouts and everything else one could imagine would come with after a one in a billion surgery achievement, he constantly wondered on his problems. One thing he needed to figure out was this Mercutio guy. He had only slight interactions with him, once in Africa, the other here, where he promised him he'd fix him. It was a curious move on his part. Why would he be so quick to kill so many others, but hesitant to Kaneda? What roll he did play for Mercutio? He needed to find out. That, and why he ordered that... thing to attack that kid. It didn't make sense and Kaneda needed to get to the bottom of it.

But how would he approach it? Surely, he couldn't ask Eve. He knew that she knew Mercutio personally, or at least it appeared so to Kaneda, but he couldn't assume. He doubted Mercutio would allow her to come here so easily unless he trusted her. These were possibilities Kaneda had to consider when dealing with this, and using better judgement, he decided he wouldn't ask Eve anything about him until he had to. For now, he would dig on his own.
But over the course of the two weeks, Kaneda found out very little about his mysterious host. Just that around here, his word was law and that if Kaneda wanted to keep his head, he needed to ask the right questions while not stepping on anyone's toes. He wasn't out of the woods yet, but he needed to play his cards right if he wanted to get out at all. To make sure he was prepared, he knew he had to focus on his rehabilitation. The sooner he got better, the sooner he could get his answers, and maybe even get home. He knew his mother and little brother must have been worried sick. Hell, they probably thought he was dead. And how would he even explain everything? "Oh hey mom, I'm back from the dead, I was vacationing on a paradise island while my body was also quadriplegic, don't mind me." It wasn't like he could tell them the truth, could he? That a pro hero annihilated half the world leaders with the flick of his finger. That was a secret he needed to take to his grave.

With his newfound ability to move came a few new privileges he ddn't have while he was in the hospital. The first of this, was of course free movement around the island. With him being one of the only people in the medical wards, it wasn't expected of him to just sit around and do nothing in what little down time he had. And so this meant being able to exit the ward and explore, even so much as going to the beach. He didn't expect the rocks to be so sharp, however, and that didn't last long. He was also given access to the kitchen area in the ward, allowed to make himself meals whenver he wanted, instead of relying on the already miniscule staff to care of him. The medical ward, for a short period, became similar to his own little living quarters. He and Eve worked for hours each day on strengthening his body. On the fifteen morning after his surgery, the 7 am alarm sounded, waking him up. Rubbing his groggy eyes, he would yawn, scratching the back of his head, looking at the clock on the wall. Groaning, he would stand up effortlessly, raising his arms to stretch and wake himself up, looking around the quiet medical ward.

"Damn, she beat me again." He would muttered to himself. Before getting ready, he would go through a quick routine of workout that Eve and him had worked on to improve his strength. Pushups, pull-ups, mountain climbers, sit ups, a small jog on a treadmill and finish with stretches. Kaneda had worked tirelessly to strengthen himself and regain full movement over these last few weeks and the results were obvious. In fact, Kaneda almost swore he was stronger and in better shape then before his incident. Throughout these weeks though, there was something Kaneda was curious about, and that was if his quirk had been effected or not. Today was the day he would find out and he was excited to see. After a quick shower and changing into different clothes, Kaneda would move throughout the lower section, passing by the occasional orphans or "kiddos" as Kaneda like to reference them, seeing as the majority were under the age of 15. Kaneda couldn't judge too much, being only 16. Or was he 17 now? He had been on Elysium for so long now, he didn't even know what day it was. Had he been here a month? Longer? He didn't know. He knew his birthday had been coming up, but really had no need for it while he was here.

When Kaneda spotted Eve, he would knock on the side of the door to get her attention, moving past her and towards the fridge.

"Morning, Doc. You're up early again." He would say in fairly fluent english as he opened the fridge, swiping a banana. "I feel kinda bad for keeping you from your homework."

The plum-haired woman kept a thoughtful expression as she clacked away on her laptop keys, briefly pausing every now and then to sip from her mug of black coffee. Although she had a notable sweet tooth, as seen with the various pastries and cakes she liked baking, she was also very partial to strong, bold flavours. Not many people could drink black coffee and claim to like it, after all. She leaned back in her chair briefly, having finished a further paragraph relating to physiotherapy and taking a brief respite from her tireless work.

Even taking a break of sorts, she remained focused on her task and was re-reading the work she had been writing up this morning. As such, she was notably surprised when she heard a knock on the door which announced the arrival of her patient. Her deep sapphire orbs shifted from her computer screen and instead focused on Kaneda's form as he walked into the kitchen, unable to help chuckling softly at the revelation that she was awake early again. "Good morning, Kaneda. And yes, I'm often awake this early regardless of what I'm doing for the day." She greeted the youth by way of response, and lightly reached out to close the lid on her laptop, giving the boy her full attention.

After a brief processing time, she realised that he had been speaking in English to her. It was sometimes difficult to discern which languages she was speaking in, due to the way in which she comprehended so many different tongues. A smile lit up her face as she moved her laptop out of the way somewhat, and gestured for her patient to join her at the table if he wished.

He spoke of his guilt for keeping her away from the schoolwork she had been plugging away at, and Eve made a dismissive gesture with her hand. "Don't be ridiculous. I'm choosing to be here and help with your full recovery." She pointed out. Indeed, she could have easily returned back to Japan after the last successful surgery. The fact that she was still here pointed to the fact that she wanted to be here, and it was considerably more important to her than any schoolwork she was keeping up with. "I cleared my departure with the professors, and they agreed that aiding with somebody's full rehabilitation was more important than attending classes. And besides, I already know all of the classwork they're sending me." She chuckled and mimicked telling a secret at this little revelation, mirth glistening in her eyes somewhat.

She had always been a very over-zealous learner; ever since she could remember. She was never satisfied with simply covering a matter of subject, and instead wanted to know all about an area of interest. So whenever something was taught that she was passionate about, you could count on her going away to read every book readily available about the subject.

Keeping her more casual, resting seated position, she tilted her head to the side as she reached for her mug of coffee once more; cradling it gently in both hands. "Now, I'm sure that you've been keeping track of time as I also have been. Today is the last official day of your rehabilitation program." She paused to sip at the bitter black coffee, allowing its warmth to fill her before sighing and returning her attention to Kaneda. "So, my question to you is... what would you like to focus on today? Are there any areas of weakness that you would like to target? Any questions you wish to ask of me?"

It felt somewhat surreal to be asking these questions of her patient. Until today, she had been telling him what to do and how many times to do it. But, for the last day on the schedule, it made sense to focus on what Kaneda wanted to do. He was the boy who would be living on after a catastrophic incident, after all.

As he stuffed the banana into his mouth, the doctor told him how he wasn't interfering with her homework in the slightest, and then proceeded to say that she knew all the material already, the boy grinning.

"Ohf, sof itf a caafe of-" He would hold up one finger, swallowing the banana. "Excuse me. So, it's a case of just getting through it. Can't get some degree or doctorate unless everything is documented or something?" He would sit at the table, sitting back in his seat. "I don't know much about how stuff with doctors work." He said, shrugging. It was an honest answer. He had never thought about the life of a doctor until now, when he saw it first hand. These last two weeks had really flown by, though, and he was ready to move on to the next chapter. He knew this meant his doctor going back home, and his one ally he had made her leaving him, but neither had much of a choice. She did, however, offer him the choice of choosing what they worked on today, and if he had any questions. He paused for a moment, wondering how to word things correctly.

"I do actually have some questions, but,"
He would pause, looking away slightly, at the door he came in, "I don't know. I've been putting asking these things since I've been here because I've been scared to. But... will I get to go home? I've been here for a month now? Two months? I can't remember. I've had no way of contacting the outside world. For all I know, my mother and brother think I'm dead...."

After revealing that she was simply going through the motions of classwork and subject matter for her medical degree, her patient went to say something after grinning at her… only for his words to be muffled to high heaven due to a whole banana being in his mouth. Eve gave the boy a bit of a look, lopsided smile and raised eyebrows punctuating the fact that this was not exactly proper breakfast behaviour. She could be a little bit of a stickler for manners and such, but she didn’t pull him up on it and simply laughed when Kaneda made a second go at saying what he had been trying to spit out before.

“Something like that.” She confirmed with a smile, briefly looking down into the pitch black hot drink she held in her hands. “I like knowing everything about a field of study; ‘thirsty for knowledge’, I think the phrase is. I conduct the normal classwork and end up reading all around the subject, so I end up knowing all about other aspects of the area, too.” She elaborated somewhat. Degrees and study differed per country, and even per college, so in most cases what Kaneda had talked about was true. In Eve’s case, she just loved reading and what she was passionate about. She could read forever about medicine, science, mathematics, architecture, and Heroics histories… just to name a few subjects in her repertoire of knowledge. “Funnily enough, I’m not studying to be a doctor. That requires far much more schooling!” She chuckled, revealing why she felt Kaneda’s way of referring to her was rather humorous.

She may yet go back and qualify as a doctor, but for now, she was focused on just getting her degree in medicine and medical research, which would open up the doors needed for her to start work on the Oasis project…

She drained the last of her coffee and laid the empty mug down on the table, leaning forward and asking her patient if he had any questions to ask of her, or any particular area that he wanted to focus on for their last day together. She really wasn’t sure what would happen to the boy after today; they had shared conversations about family and the like… perhaps he would go home to them? It almost made her outwardly frown. She wasn’t aware of what Mercutio’s plans were, nor the circumstances of Kaneda even being here…

She had found it better not to ask.

Following the manner of opening up the floor, so to speak, for her patient to ask anything, he grew somewhat hesitant. He mentioned that he had some questions, and then paused before elaborating by saying that he’d been scared to ask them. The question was ultimately about whether or not he was allowed to go home, and that he had no contact with the outside word. This made Eve furrow her brow somewhat, unable to help wondering what on earth Mercutio D. Regalis was playing at. Why had he not permitted this youth no access to what was happening at home?

She made a mental note as her brow furrowed, a clear sign that she was either irate about something, or deep in thought. As it happens, it was both of those things at once. “I’m unsure of how you came to be here in the first place, or how you were so badly damaged. I was asked to save your life, and so I came; no questions asked.” She nodded slowly, leaning back once more with her arms coming to fold tightly across her chest. “I will speak to Mercutio about the particulars, and unless he says otherwise or reveals further to me, I see no problem with you returning to Japan with me.” This was fair enough to say, she felt.

It didn’t feel quite right with her, but she was sure that some light could be shed upon the situation if she spoke to her old and somewhat bizarre friend. He was an elusive and mysterious one; that much was for certain. A smile returned to Eve’s face after briefly delving into her own thoughts, and she directed her attention back to Kaneda again. “You can ask anything of me, of course. I just might not have the answers to some things.”

She told him that she hadn't really asked any questions about Kaneda, which he understood. He would nod in agreement as she said this. He imagined people didn't question Mercutio's methods very much, the man wielding so much raw power and known all across Asia and probably some of the world, The Crimsoul was a fearsome being to go up against. Kaneda saw his power firsthand and knew he didn't want to question him, which was a large part of why he was asking these questions now. Even by asking them to her, his friend, doctor, someone who will go to the outside world nonetheless, he had presented the issue to someone. Even if he were to not make it off the island, at least some record of him would indeed move on. He trusted Eve and from their short time together, Kaneda had seemed to get a gauge on her moral compass. She was a right woman, and would strive for justice. He knew that he would be in good hands if he continued to trust her.

When she about asking Mercutio if he could go home, back to Japan with her, his eyes would widen softly.
"You would do that for me? I wouldn't want you to get on Mercutio's bad side because of me, but..." His gaze would shift back to her, a large smile on his face.
"If you can convince him, then I'd be in great debt to you."

As much as he knew it'd help his case and potential to get off the island, he couldn't tell Eve about what happened. About what he knew. About what the world hadn't seen. He was one of the only surviving outsiders who had seen the thousands die. If he told someone, someone like Eve... It would throw things into even more of a mess. He couldn't incriminate Mercutio like that. Despite his tactics, he was a hero that was needed for the world. Ultimately he did more good than he did bad, at least Kaneda hoped. Perhaps him saving Kaneda was because he felt guilty, or maybe just because he was a witness. Either way, Kaneda was alive, which meant he served a purpose to the Crimsoul. What was the purpose, however, was yet to be identified. Either way, Kaneda snapped back to the moment at hand.

"Right. Questions." He would lift his hand up, placing his palm upward in the air. A tiny tornado would appear momentarily, unaffecting the environment due to his more advanced control.
"My quirk has been doing something weird and maybe you could help me figure out why." He said, looking at the tornado, resting his other arm's elbow on the table and his chin on his hand.

"My quirk gives me the ability to absorb airborne elements, compress them, then release them in blasts." He would shoot a small air ball out of his hand, catching it midair. "Usually, it's just compressed air. However, I tried to use it on something physical. Generally, it just sticks to my hand, but in this case..." He would point his palm at the vase that sat in the middle of the table. Air suction would quickly gasp it towards him, connecting with his hand, would begin to disintegrate, quickly becoming nothing into Kaneda's closed fist. Slowly opening his fingers, dust would slip beneath them, onto the table.

"See? It's never done that before. Could it be something due to my nerves?"
