Artemis looked down at the assortment of materials on her bed. Strips of fabric, some rusty D-rings and, of course, some sewing needles and thread. The little dragon had a plan in mind for something that would make her day-to-day life easier, but getting the materials was difficult. She had the fabric, the rings and something to attach it all together. All she needed now was buckles. The little dragon pondered her dilemma for a bit. With the influx of orphans came the influx of trash. Some discarded things they had that reminded them of families, others items that were too worn to use. 'One might have had a schoolbag that they threw away... Artemis thought and slipped off of her bed. She padded outside and paused, taking some time to get her bearings and remember where everything was. The good thing about being so small was that most people tended to overlook you. Artemis had explored quite a bit of the island, even when she was restricted to only three legs as one had to be in a sling. She knew where the discarded trash, especially from the orphans, were put and headed straight there. She moved with purpose, plodding along at a fast and steady pace with her head up and eyes forward. She didn't spare a glance for anyone she passed, but did make sure to keep out from under their feet. When Artemis arrived at the bins she jumped right up to the first one and looked in. The people of Elysium were frugal, but that didn't mean they didn't have waste. Seeing nothing of interest in that bin, the little dragon hopped off of it and then clambered up the side of the other one. A squeak of surprised delight escaped her muzzle as the little dragon saw not one, but two schoolbags! Both were very worn down, dirty, and the zip looked like it didn't work on one, but they were exactly what the dark creature wanted. Artemis jumped in and used her mouth to whip both of the bags out of the bin before following suit. The little dragon bent down and picked up both bags by the handle, using her mouth. The taste was disgusting and the little orphan made a face, but she persevered. The item in mind that she had to make was a harness, with pockets that she could store things in. Being a quadruped was annoying, which was why she was determined to make something with pockets. Her wings could get in the way and her feathers could be very slippery, which was why a harness was the best idea in her mind. Artemis padded back to her room, bags being dragged along beside her. She dumped them on the ground before her bed, not wanting to soil her sheets with whatever the items had on them. She proceeded to start picking at the buckles, trying to get them detached so that she herself could re-purpose them. Summary

There was little to do on the islands that a bookish person like Derge would find interesting. He fell back into his old habits of spending hours on end cooped up just simply reading. Even though he had seen the value of a good physical condition in the battle, Derge had seemed to regress back. Realizing just what he had been doing was exactly the opposite of what he needed to do in order to achieve his newly set goal, the tall teen ventured out. The islands were more tropical than what Derge was used to. The heat was a large part of the reason he had been staying in. Despite it all, Derge finally decided to move around a little. It was strange, he was living on an island with a group of strangers that he hardly ever interacted with. There was no rent and no one was forcing them to work, all they had to do was exist. The thought of suicide wasn't something Derge had dwelled on much before he came to the island but now that he had all of the time in the world and not a thing to worry about, he scarcely thought of anything else. He stood, leaned up against a building imagining all of the ways he could kill himself. Of course, Derge had no intention of actually going through with it...at least he didn't think he did. The thought of it both intrigued and scared him at the same time. It was as if the more he thought about it the more it seemed like he was trying to talk himself into doing it. Just when Derge was about losing his mind, the small dragon he had fought alongside with against Mercutio trotted by. She was carrying what appeared to be far over her maximum carrying capacity. Maybe it was because she was the only one around or something else but Derge found himself strangely interested in the small dragon. He found himself following the petite dragon. He walked up behind her, quickly closing the gap with his long strides. Derge's eye dilated, not like a normal person would. The iris reshaped its self to look more cat-like or rather more dragon-like. A hard shapeable light formed around his hand as he reached down towards the small dragon. For a brief moment, the light almost appeared as if it had formed the claw he had used to try and attack Mercutio with. In an instant, the light dissipated into nothingness leaving no trace of what could have happened. Derge grabbed onto the school bags intending to carrying them for the small dragon. "I don't suppose those dirty things would taste very good huh? If you don't mind, I would be happy to carry these for you. Just lead the way, I'll follow." he said ready to follow her. |

The little dragon tugged and huffed at the two bags. They were heavier than she originally though, or that could have been the heat beating down onto her dark feathers. The only bonus of the sun being so strong was that it showed off how multicoloured she truly was. The dark blues and purples glistened amongst the sparse black, seeming to shift between the colours at a whim. Despite that, her back seemed mainly to be blue, with only a few flecking of black and purple, while the bottom half of the dragon seemed mainly purple, with a small mottling of blue and black. Artemis paused in her heaving, an odd creeping feeling growing up her spine. The sense that she was in danger, or of someone looming over her, came upon the little dragon so sudden that she didn't have time to react before Derge grabbed the bags. She jerked back at the sudden appearance of the other, wings flaring out to help aid her escape if needed. The orphan looked up at Derge, trying to recognize where she had seen him before. The sudden fright had slowed the process, but she soon remembered in the fight against Mercutio, a boy with light powers. He needed a boost to get up and above the crimson hero, and she provided herself as a stepping stone. "Wri-oo" she whistled hello, the tip of her tail flicking in greeting as well. The boy in front of her was a fellow orphan, wrest from his life beforehand and left to stew on the islands. He wasn't a thread...or at least that's what the dragon thought so. She dearly wanted a friend, wanted company of those who thought she was intelligent and worth being around, that the little dragon didn't question why Derge was there, nor why he wanted to help her. Instead, Artemis turned around to head towards her room, looking back every so often to make sure that the other orphan was following. Once they reached her abode, Artemis jumped up onto the small desk that was provided for her and grabbed some paper and a pen. Communication was key to a good relationship, even if it was just between friends. Artemis doubted that Derge knew how to read sign language, as so far everyone she had met on Elysium didn't. The little dragon scribbled her message onto the paper before she offered it to Derge to take. The orphan then leaped onto her bed, not wanting to waste daylight. She didn't have any lights in her room and was inexperienced in what she wanted to do, so thought sight was important. The little dragon began to measure her body with strips of fabric, tying a knot to indicate the length. She measure her chest, back, and belly, to name a few. The message that she had passed to Derge read as such: "Hello, I am Artemis! My mouth is not made for words, but I do know sign language. I do not think that you would, which is why I wrote on this piece of paper. Thank you for carrying those bags for me. I am making a harness so I can carrying things around. What is your name?" |

Derge followed the little dragon into her room, carrying the bags. If she had actually looked like a human girl it might have been a bit awkward but as she was more animalistic than human it didn't really bother the teen. Derge looked around the room, it was plain and a little shabby, pretty much like all of the other rooms on the island. The modern conveniences of life were gone from their lives, likely for the remainder of them. He was pretty bored standing there. All he could do was watch the little one do her work as he wasn't particularly skilled with his hands. It was laughable honestly, the creature was better at crafting that most who actually had hands. Derge would remember this. He always kept an eye out for someone or something that could be an asset. Not only could she glide, the little dragon also had a talent for turning trash into treasure. He would have to maintain a good relationship with her and not allow him to slip up like he had earlier. Derge finally got around to reading Artemis' note. "I see, so you can understand me. That's a relief at least. I studied sign langue and Spanish but I fear I'm not fluent in either. I guess this would be a good time to brush up on it though. For now, write down what you want and then sign it to me. It'll be an extra step for the time being however eventually I'll pick it up well enough." He said leaning against the desk in the room. He noticed the Artemis trying to hurry her craft. Haste makes waste, it was an old saying that Derge had read in some book somewhere. He couldn't remember the exact details of it. "Don't worry about the light for I am the light." he said holding an orb of light in his hand. Derge held his arm with his free hand, pumping more power into the orb, thus increasing the brightness. It was almost blinding. An idea popped into Derge's head however that was something for another time. |

With her thread all knotted up, the little dragon was ready to progress to the next stage. She gathered up bits of fabric, making three layers with the two outer layers the same colour and material. She only kept the middle layer for extra padding, to try and make the cobbled harness more comfortable. Artemis kept it all together by using some of her spare needles, since she didn't have safety pins in her small sewing kit. She made the top and bottom 'pads' of the harness, making a mental note to add the pockets in later. Despite keeping her hands busy, the orphan easily paid attention to what Derge was saying. She noted that he didn't introduce himself, but supposed that it could be because he was still trying to get over everything that happened. 'I know that I didn't want to talk to anyone until a few days after. I still haven't told anyone my last name either...' The little dragon sighed, sympathy in her eyes. She'd go on thinking of him as 'The guy with the light quirk' for now. "Thank you" Artemis signed, her paw moving from the bottom of her chin in a downward arc towards the other. The offer Derge gave of using his quirk for her use, even if it was just being able to have her see what she was doing, was certainly appreciated by the dragon. The little dragon wrote down what she wanted to say and handed the man the paper before she hoisted herself up onto her haunches, paws up and ready to sign. "It is amazing that you know a little in both sign language and another language, and that you want to continue learning. Most people find out that I can write and don't even try to bother learning sign. I only know english and sign language" The orphan made sure that her movements were precise, if a bit slow. Her opinion of Derge had raised when he said that he wanted to learn more in sign language. Artemis was more than happy to help him on that. She envisioned a future where she could just sign out what she wanted to say and people would understand her. The little dragon turned her focus onto the material in front of her. She picked up the final needle she had remaining, the one with the biggest eye, and unspooled some black thread. She threaded the needle with little to no difficultly and dragged through the amount of thread that she thought she would need. Adding a little bit extra to that length, Artemis folded it over and then nibbled on the black string until it was no longer attached to the roll. She pushed it out of her way and tied a knot. The orphan then fixated her gaze on the piece she had prepared early. 'I just push it in and then out...right?' she pondered, never having really sewn before. Artemis then proceeded to do a running stitch, tying the three pieces of fabric together with the doubled thread. She worked efficiently and tidily. The stitches were small, although the spacing between them sometimes varied. But the work was simple, and apart from a few mishaps where she managed to prick herself, the little dragon was happy. She was busy, and she had someone to converse with. What more could an orphan want? |

Derge wasn't particularly good at socializing. He had spent his life either buried in books or only speaking when what he had to say was pre-prepared. There were very few instances when Derge was allowed to actually speak to someone without the conversation being prepared and no conversations where he had to actually say more than a few words. Derge was much better at analyzing people than he was conversing. "Ah thanks for that. I've always been a little bookish, so I usually try to learn whatever I can. The reason I never really continued my studies is that I never really needed them nor did I have someone to practice the skills with. Really, you're doing as much for me as I am for you by being so patient." he said looking from Artemis to the orb he held in his hand. Once Derge was finished with what he had to say he began concentrating on the orb in his palm. Derge split the orb in half and then split the orbs in half once again. He put more energy into the orbs until all four were the same size as the original. As he concentrated on the orbs they began spinning around his hand in a circle. He wondered what he could do if he added rotations to the orbs or even just one of them. |

The orphan held up her work for inspection. The line of thread varied in distance, both between the lines and from the edge of the fabric, but it held together when given a firm tug. The little dragon looked smug. It was good work, especially for a beginner, and would serve her well. She put the pads down onto the bed and quickly went over to the bags, where she made short work of removing the buckles. She debated whether or not she should use the straps that held them to the bags, but ultimately decided against it. They were too spoiled to use without a thorough wash, which wasn't available on these islands. Artemis took up the pen and paper again to reply to Derge. "It is always good to learn new things, especially languages." The little dragon paused, and then started to write below what she had put down. "I like reading too. I prefer fantasy books, or history books. It is sad though how dragons are always portrayed as the bad guys. We are not all evil" The little dragon looked at what she wrote, wondering if she should add anything more. Not thinking of any, she put the paper down and signed that message out to her companion. Once done, the orphan returned to her crafting. She wound the scraps of fabric that she was to use as straps through the buckles. She made short work of it, her paws showing just how dexterous they could be. Artemis soon had the two pads attached to each other via the buckles. Holding up the finished work, the dragon pondered on what was missing... 'That's right, I forgot the pockets!' she realized. Hunting through the fabric that was left, Artemis knew that the pockets that she could make would have to be small, but it'd be better than nothing. Not to mention if they were large, they might get in the way of her movement. The little dragon had her needled threaded in no time and started to work on the most vital part of her harness. She was making two small pockets that would attach at the back, above the buckles, and one that would be sewn onto the top like a sleeve. |

Derge picked up the paper and read what the dragon had written for him. This time he nodded his head and watched carefully as she signed the message to him as well. He was trying to pay attention to both Artemis and his orbs at the same time. Finally having had enough of the orbs, Derge merged them back into one large orb before shrinking it back down to its original size. He was feeling the urges again. His eyes dilated in the same way they had before. Derge wasn't one to be controlled by instinct, he vowed that he would let nothing control him again. Closing his eyes he took a deep breath and when he re-opened them his eyes were back to normal. He was finally getting a grasp on the situation and why exactly he had been attracted to the dragon in the first place. His quirk was hungry to fulfill its purpose. "I guess I'm kind of a dragon as well. My quirk is the dragon slayer, which gives me the ability to use this light element to slay dragons with a power that supposedly belonged to a dragon in the first place. It's an odd power that slowly turns you into the creature that it was made to kill in the first place. Luckily I have no such desires as the knights of old. Slaying a dragon would gain me nothing." he said trying to keep his mind occupied with the orb. Edited by Cobdogred, Jan 12 2018, 06:47 AM.

Artemis listened to Derge, eyes focused on her work. His tone and what he was saying surprised the little dragon a bit. She had no idea there was a quirk like that, let alone that one may struggle with urges that it may impose. She finished up the three pockets and put them aside, picking up her paper and pen with a somber air. "The mark of an intelligent creature is that they can resist their urges. I want to bite people when they try to pat me, but I don't always do that." The orphan signed carefully again, but there was clear amusement in her movements. While the biting thing was true, it was also meant as a bit of a joke, to try and get her companion to at least smile. All of the orphan's lives had become grim. Artemis thought that any joke, even one at her own expense, might be appreciated. With the pockets now done, the little dragon now started to sew them onto the harness. She felt like she was getting a hang of using the needle, even though the amount of times that she accidentally stabbed herself had not decreased. The orphan was proud of her hodgepodge creation. She could have bought much better in the stores, but she wouldn't have gained the skills nor the companionship that she now held. |

"Hmm, I suppose that's true. Honestly, I can see why people would want to pet you, you're a lot like some cute fluffy animal," he said in response to the comment Artemis had written down. Derge completely missed the fact that the small dragon was trying to make a joke. "I've never been one to follow through with things like emotions. They usually just end up making things worse." Derge said as if what he was saying was normal. Looking away from his orb, his eyes fixed themselves on the small dragon. "At least you don't seem like it bothers you all that much. It's not like I chose to be born with these abilities. Although neither did you." he said with a sigh. All of the sudden it hit him. He realized that Artemis had tried to make a joke in order to lighten the mood. Derge turned his head and looked out of the window trying to think of a way to fix things. It hadn't seemed like it but time had passed. The sun was going down and the light outside was dwindling. It gave him an idea. He increased the luminescence of the orb in his hand. "I think I'll call this technique light bulb or maybe mood lighting," he said with a small grin. Edited by Cobdogred, Jan 16 2018, 06:32 AM.

The little dragon was a bit sad that her joke went over Derge's head. That sadness was brief, however, mainly due to the fact that she was never really good at telling jokes. She was far too used to people missing when she made a joke, especially if they were trying to focus on reading her sign language. Due to the usage of her companions quirk, the little dragon hadn't noticed the passage of time either. She snorted in what could be easily interpreted as laughter at the names that the other orphan had chosen for his technique. Artemis picked up the paper and pen again to write her thoughts down. "I like mood lighting best. But be careful to not cause night blindness with it. Or maybe do, but not at yourself" the little creature advised. Her signing had gotten a bit faster as she got used to motioning out her words for the other. She kept on forgetting to go slower for Derge so that learning was easier for him. But it was getting late, and probably best for the two orphans to go their separate ways and get ready for bed. Being as young as she was, Artemis tired easier than her older companion and now that her job was done, that sleepiness was settling in. 'What is a polite way to tell someone to leave?' The orphan wondered. It wasn't that she hated Derge. As a matter of fact she quite enjoyed his company and someone to talk to was rare. "I like to wake up in the middle of the night to go for a walk. It's nice and cool and the island is rather beautiful then. Do you want to join me later?'" Artemis wrote. She tactfully omitted the part where she used this time to train, not wanting to rouse suspicion in the other. Edited by DwagonKitsune, Jan 19 2018, 10:36 AM.

"Haha. Mood lighting it is then," he said with a small chuckle. Derge tried to keep up with the signs but the rate she went was a little fast for him to catch it all. It was fine though, Derge didn't say anything about it. He didn't expect to be able to learn it all in one night. Derge kept his focus on the orb of light. His eyes were beginning to droop and he could feel, sleep trying to pull him into the abyss. "Oh yeah. I suppose you'd need to get some sleep for that. I'll leave you to it. I'm not sure if I'll wake up for it, but yeah I'd come along for a middle of the night walk. Ah if I'm sleeping just feel free to wake me up." Derge said before turning towards the door. Derge walked out of the door before closing his hand in on the orb of light extinguishing it like some kind small flame. "Good night," he said before closing the door and walking away. [EXIT] |

Earnings:
Comments: A fair thread. A friendship between dragons, and an appropriate discussion throughout. Some themes - especially Derge's depression - were kind of washed over, I felt, but there were others that shone. I'd call this gadgeteering successful, yeah! Enjoy the spoils! Notes
