All around her was dark. It oozed about, somehow having a sickly substance to it. Whenever Artemis breathed, she could feel it clogging her throat. It clutched to her eyes, the abyss pressing down. All around was dark. Everything was dark, for there was nothing but. The little dragon tried to escape it. She tried to make noise. She tried to wriggle above it all. But she was too weak. Her wings, which had never failed her in what she asked of them, could not blow away the suffocating night.

She was alone.

She was too weak.

There was someone out there coming to kill her.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Artemis woke up from the nightmare with a loud squawk. Her heart pounded in her chest. If she could sweat, she would've. The little dragon got onto her trembling feet and shook, hoping to shake away the remnants of her bad dream. The dim room didn't help calm her. All it did was remind her of that forest she had been chucked in.

It was a bit odd to the dragon. She thought that she would have had nightmares about her mother dying, and the chaos of the African elections. Sometimes, she did, but the terror that the dark inflicted on her seemed stronger and lingered in such a way that a quick death in a flash of crimson did not.

But no matter what she did, Artemis knew that she wouldn't be able to get to sleep again. It was always the same. Every night she had a nightmare. If she slept with the lights on, the red glare that she saw when she closed her eyes reminded her of how her mother died. If everything was dim and dark, or she crawled under her covers, she'd dream of the suffocating abyss that swallowed everything.

The little dragon hopped off of the bed. She winced as her sore shoulder took the impact, but it had healed enough from the fight to not cause her much problems. Artemis padded out of the small room she had been allocated and out into the night. There was a small gym set up for the residents which was where the dragon headed to. It was tucked away, but well stocked. All of the equipment was left out, but there was only one thing that the dragon was interested in there.

Artemis slipped through the night. Her dark colouring helped her blend in. With it being the dead of night, the feeble attempts that the dragon made at avoiding notice - like sticking to the shadows, peeking around corners - worked quite well. She didn't know if they were allowed free range whenever they wanted, so it'd be better if she tried her best at avoiding notice.

When she arrived to the gym, Artemis glid right up to the door and launched herself at the handle. She landed with a soft thumb, holding onto the knob. She shifted her weight so that she had a paw freed and used that talon to fiddle with the lock. It was a simple one, which was why the little dragon was able to open it without much hassle. She rode the door as it swung opened and shimmied to the other side. Artemis set it back on lock again and bumped it closed.

The gym was quiet and dark. Artemis was alone, which suited her just fine. She'd kept mostly to herself since the fight with Mercutio. She felt like she needed the space to think, but the little dragon didn't know what to think about. Her memories were too painful, and her future too ominous. What was a 9 year old to do?

Artemis's answer to that was simple. By day she'd study. She'd done her best at reading as many books as she could get her paws on. Even a few language dictionaries, which she'd hoped would help her understand some of the other people who lived here. And when she couldn't sleep, she'd train as vigorously as possible. She needed to get stronger.

She needed to learn to fly.

The little dragon located the trampoline with ease. The confidence of her movements showed that this wasn't her first time in the dark gym. Artemis eased herself onto the stretched platform and paused, head cocked and listening to see if she was truly alone. After a second of usual silence, the dragon leaped up into the air and landed squarely in the middle of the tramp. She continued doing this for a few times, gaining height, before adding thumps of her wings. These pushed her higher, but eventually gravity had it's way and dragged her back down. Still, she prevailed, strengthening her wings as much as she knew how.

This was not what Chloe expected.
With her coffee in hand she looks at the construction site in front of her. She rechecked the sign to her left. it was band new. "Elysium Police Departement". There was no doubt about it. this was the place. There were no workers at this hour.
Allons bon ... Now what?
There were a couple of container buildings in to the left of the entrance.
ok, maybe there is some contact info in there
Chloe walked over. The door was locked, but there was a fingerprint scanner next to the door. it was probably for the people working here, but chloe put her thumb in the scanner.
a display above the scanner lit up and her name appeared on it
what in gods name?
then with a click, the door unlocked and swung open.
Chloe was surprised. she stared at the door that just opened. this was not what she expected. why did her fingerprint work on this container. what is going on? she decided to just step inside and see. what could possibly go wrong.
Chloe flipped the light-switch next to the door. it was a small office with 1 desk. on the desk was a computer and a piece of paper. she walked to the desk and picked up the paper. it only contained 4 words. "you got this, sheriff". wait, this was for the sheriff. put it didn't contain a name. who was the sheriff?
There was something else on the desk. it was hidden underneath the paper before. it was a badge, glowing with crimson energy. Chloe picked it up. it was a sheriffs badge. aha! now she would know who ... "Chloe Blanchette. Sheriff". No, she must have read that wrong. "Chloe Blanchette. Sheriff". She didn't know what she was reading. and sat down in the office chair behind her.
Me? Sheriff? That ... That must be a mistake?
She reread the badge and the note a couple more times. then she just laughed. this was a joke. it must be. she checked the desk to confirm, booted up the computer to see what was on it. nothing. no files. no prior workload. only basic office equipment.
this, this just can't be true. she was new! fresh out of police academy. she was supposed to join the police force, not become the sheriff! let alone be the only police officer on the island. this was just ...
for some time chloe just sat there thinking about what had happened. after a while she started exploring the other containers. she found out that 2 other containers were designed as temporary holding cells, and the third was a small living area. since it opened with her fingerprint, she figured this was where she was supposed to live for the time being. She immediately made use of the shower to clear her head.

after 20 minutes she stepped out with new resolve. if this was the task given to her, she would not disappoint. she could build something from this. and if the size of the building under construction was any indication, that's what the overseer expected her to do. she looked out from the window and saw the moon high in the sky. she didn't have much sleep in the past few days, but she could manage for one more night.
She opened the warderobe. there was a single simple office-dress hanging in it. it was new, she could tell.
Not exactly my style, but it's better than wearing those sweaty ones. but mercutio, your taste in clothing, vous n’avez pas de goût. you have shit taste
She put it on anyway, then grabbed her badge and put it in her handbag. She wrote a note: "for urgent police business, call your Sheriff" and then her phone-number. she pinned it on the door outside the police container.
Now, come at me elysium
she stepped outside, locked the container and went on patrol, on foot, ignoring the police car that was parked next to the containers.

...

she walked around in town. it was calm at night. nothing happening. no activity. just a few cats looking for an early meal. and eerie quiet.
as she walked passed one of the larger buildings she heard a strange sound. a small *thud*. Chloe positioned herself next to a window of the bulding she was passing and carefully listened for other sounds. there it was again. a small *thud*. it almost sounded mechanical.
Chloe peeked in through the window. something was moving in there. in the middle of the night. Chloe stepped back into the street to get a better look at the building. this didn't look like a house at all, so why would someone be here? she walked to the main door. there was a plate next to it. Chloe took her flashlight out of her handbag and lit it to read.
Quote:

Gym
Open to public from 10:00AM to 16:00PM
Daily Training sessions from 16:30PM to 20:00PM

yep, some cat was probably tearing the place down looking for food.
first good deed as a police officer. save a cat
She tried to open the door. locked. obviously. the cat got in though.
Chloe walked around to the back of the building checking windows and shining her flashlight to see if they were locked. after a few minutes she found one. a small window wide open. it was just big enough for her to fit through if you. only problem, it was about 2.5 meters above the ground.
seriously?
Chloe put the flashlight between her teeth and jumped up to the ledge, then pulling herself up and through the window. she found herself in the girls changing rooms.
at some point, I'm gonna come back here and find out exactly why only the window to the girls changing room, is open at night.
grabbing the flashlight again, she looked around the room, looking for the cat.

For Gjöll, the nights following the events in Africa were restless. The few hours of sleep he would get were almost always preceded by hours of vivid recollections of the bloodbath he had been a part of. He couldn't shake the visions, no matter how hard he tried to push them out or ignore them. His feral subconscious obviously enjoyed the memories of their horrific carnage and took every opportunity to bring them to mind. Still, despite the amount of guilt he felt he was sure they had made the best of one of the worst situations imaginable. As attempts to sleep were a near hopeless endeavor, Gjöll would spend most nights outside, prowling the island and observing new residents from a far. He still worried that he eventually run into someone whose family's deaths he was personally responsible for.

A strange cry form inside the refugee housing area would peak his interest. He sat on the roof of one of the shelters, trying to figure out the source. It wouldn't be long before he heard the faint pattering of tiny feet as they made contact with the igneous terrain that covered the surface of the Island of Alana. It appeared as if one of the residents was having problems sleeping as well. He waited until the pattering began to fade before making his leap as silently as possible to the ground. He followed the footsteps at a distance. Based on the stop and go pattern of their movements, he figured whomever it was was taking extra precautions to avoid being seen.

The boy didn't care if they were up to something or not, he was just curious. He continued following at a distance for several minutes. It wasn't until he heard a loud thump that he opted to take a look at the adventurous orphan. While he wasn't sure on their name, he recognized them as the little dragon that had taken part in the fight against Mercutio. He looked at the building the tiny dragon was attempting to enter. Since when was there a gym in Elysium? In his experience, Mercutio always favored "personally tailored training" or shark punching as his preferred methods of instruction rather than the standard physical grind you would get a gym. Perhaps he had set it up as a goodwill gesture to the orphans that were not chosen to be trained directly by him. The intention of the building made little difference to the situation at hand. The little dragon made quick work of the lock, slid inside and, judging by the sharp click made when the door closed, locked it behind them.

As the immediate worry of detection was gone, Gjöll walked over to the door to examine the door. Sure enough the it was locked. One of the blades on his gauntlets could easily pick the lock, but it wasn't be worth getting them stuck unsheathed again. He could always just break the handle clean off the door. However, such a heavy handed display wasn't normally in his nature and would completely nullify the effort he had gone through to keep his presence hidden. The boy's thoughts about the best way to gain access to the building where interrupted by a repetitive thud that started coming from inside the gym.

As he began to wonder what the little dragon was up to, the boy caught the sound of another set of approaching foot steps from around the right side of the building. Gjöll quickly, but quietly, moved around the left side of the building away from the oncoming foot steps. He would crouch for a moment gathering the strength in his legs, before leaping toward the roof. Luckily, the shortage of resources and hurried construction of the newer building meant most of them were only one story and the gym was no exception. He had always been a rather dexterous child, mostly due to affects of his quirk, and was able to easily bend and twist himself in ways normal people couldn't. However, this current feat of acrobatics was only possible due to the physical strength he had gained in the last year. He grabbed the lip of the roof with both hands easily supporting his lighter body weight for the few seconds it took to carefully lower himself down onto the roof. He would time his final touch down with one of the repetitive thuds coming from within the building, to help mask any noise he made.

After a few moments of silence to get a bearing on the foot steps of the 3rd party that had arrived, Gjöll crept along the roof toward them. He slowly looked over the edge get a look at who had decided drop in on the night time work out session. The boy did not recognize the young woman who was snooping around below. She seemed slightly too old and far too level headed to be one of the refugees from the events in Africa, and he was fairly certain she wasn't a student of Mercutio, as he most likely would have seen her before. After a few minutes and a careful lap around building, the mystery woman found an open window on the back side of the building to gain access to the gym. Within a few seconds she had hoisted her self up and slipped through the window.

The boy sat on the roof above the window carefully listening for movement happening inside the building. He planned to follow the woman's example and use the window as his entrance, but needed to make sure that he wasn't close enough behind her to attract her attention. He listened carefully for any signs of distress from either party, ready to accelerate his plan if something started.

The gym that the little dragon had decided to train in was a bit unkempt. Boxes were piled up in corners and along the walls, some opened, some empty, and others yet to be touched. As well as the trampoline that Artemis was using, there was a set of weights in the middle of the room. The various metal bars were mostly on their rack, but a few of the heavier ones were left where they were dropped. There were no treadmills or expensive equipment. Some wires dangled down from the ceiling, showing where lights would be fixed when it became time that electricity could be used here.

This, however, didn't bother Artemis. The one thing she thought was useful to her was here and already set up. She had found it while people were walking in and out of the building, the door being held open by a convenient block of wood. She had been shooed out, no one wanting a little orphan underfoot, but had seen enough to formulate her plan. The little dragon knew no one would come back after dark. This place didn't have lights, making it a veritable death trap, and who would want to work after dark?

Artemis continued to bounce, oblivious to the door knob's quiet rattle. She continued to push off with her legs, and push down with her wings. Her focus was single minded, trying to see if there was any difference at all in how she felt. For a second, during a particular powerful thrust, she felt as if she were weightless. The only time that the little dragon had ever felt something similar to this was when she was first training in gliding, and a special equipment that produced strong thermals was used. Those thermals had raised her up and allowed her to get used to holding out her wings.

The joy at that feeling, at finally getting some results, was cut short by the soft thud of something landing in the other room. Artemis fell back down to earth. Her heart pumped loudly, as she thought that she had finally been caught. 'I should have waited until later!' her mind berated her as the little dragon shook off her fright. What was done was done, all Artemis had to do was hide and hope that whoever had discovered her wouldn't find her and get frustrated enough to leave.

The little dragon leaped off of the trampoline. The extra bounce, for once, was not calculated for and Artemis tumbled to the ground. As she scrambled to her feet, she climbed over one of the bar of weights that was left lying about. It clunked as it rolled, heading in the opposite direction that the dragon was going. The little creature sped straight for some boxes and leapt again, landing on them with a thump.

Artemis scrambled over the top of the boxes until she found one that was opened. She dove into it, some packaging peanuts going flying as the dark dragon buried herself in them. The little dragon huddled at the bottom of the box, heart pounding and body trembling, as she awaited whether or not her hiding place would be discovered. This entire situation reminded her too much of her nightmare, making the poor thing feel a bit sick to her stomach.

Chloe heard a lot of scattering all of a sudden. she cautiously walked closer to the door of the gym main hall. then a loud loud sound of something heavy moving. the cat seems to be playing with something. Better deal with it quickly before it breaks anything.
Chloe threw open the door and shined around the main hall. her focus went to the weight almost immediately. it was just rolling but chloe focused her light on it for several seconds before looking around more.
This place was a mess. it was a gym but it was clear it was still under construction. boxes everywhere. there was packaging material on the ground. but no cat directly in sight. the smart creature was hiding.

Throwing caution in the wind, Chloe put out her flashlight and strided to the front door to open it. it was just a lever on the inside making it much easier. at least, this way, if the cat ran away from her, it would still go outside. which meant, mission accomplished. she took her gloves out of her handbag. usually these were meant to prevent her from accidentally scratching others. but right now, they were more for a wild cat scratching her. you never know what diseases it might have.
then she crouched down and stretched her arm in front rubbing her fingers to represent food. back home, this never failed to lure out the cats of the orphanage.
viens ici, minou, minou, minou (come here, kitty, kitty, kitty)
she repeated it a few times, hoping a cat would come out.

when nothing else happens, chloe quickly decided this tactic isn't working. holding her flashlight towards the moonlight coming in from the outside, she found and pressed the switch shining a beam of light through the gym once again. she checked out the gym from the position she was standing, examining where a cat could hide, or have found food. the boxes were an obvious hiding spot? her eye fell on the weight again. she then followed an imaginary path back to where it could be coming from
Si cette a tombe...? (If that fell down ...?)
her light fell on a pile of boxes with a bunch of wrapping material next to it. She shut off her flashlight and snuck closer. she whispered to herself viens ici, minou, minou, minou (come here, kitty, kitty, kitty)
She was right next to the box Artemis was in looking over the pile to see if any cat was hiding behind it. no such luck. but the top box was open. could it be in there? she opened aremis's box and looked inside. for a cat, it was being remarkably quiet.

Gjöll smirked as he listened to the commotion caused by the young woman's landing. It appeared the adventurous little dragon was quite scared of getting caught. Judging by the repetitive sound coming from the building, the boy didn't think the dragon had been wrecking the place or hurting anyone. Did the dragon think they would be in trouble just for wandering around at night? The boy was fairly certain Mercutio didn't care what the majority of the orphans did. As long as they didn't destroy/steal anything, try to leave the Island of Alana or kill anyone without good reason, they were free to live their lives as they saw fit.

Gjöll waited until he heard the footsteps further in the building to move down from the roof. Again using his strength to control his decent, he slipped down through the window and into the building making very little noise. He waited and listened as the footsteps made their way across the building toward the entrance. After half a minute his eyes would adjust to the much lower light level. He recognized the sound of the heavy front door opening, and took a peek into the primary room of the gym. While it was too dark to see any fine details, he could still see how much of the mess the place was. Boxes were piled up everyone and miscellaneous large pieces of equipment were strewn about the room, including a trampoline which took up a large amount of space.

viens ici, minou, minou, minou

The young woman repeated the call several times, as if trying to lure out an animal that was hiding. Gjöll didn't understand what she was saying, but he noticed the endearing tone and melody of the call. Nothing moved in response to her calls, so appeared the small dragon did not recognize her voice either. Just who was she? When the attempts to lure the dragon proved unsuccessful, she pulled her flashlight out starting searching around the room. The light eventually settled on a group of boxes. He noticed the trail of small indents across the top of a few of the boxes which led one that was open, as well as some packing peanuts that were carelessly strewn around it.

Apparently woman had noticed something as well, since shut of her light and began to move toward the boxes. Gjöll followed suit, moving low to the ground on all fours and avoiding obstacles as he crept across the room. The woman whispered her call again, as she searched around the box. She stopped, looking at the open box. Was she contemplating reaching into it?

"I wouldn't reach in there if I were you." The boy stood up and warned from about 5M away, his voice even at a normal volume, seemed loud in the tense atmosphere. In hind sight, it may have a bad idea to get this close before making his presence known, as he had no idea how the she would react or what she was capable of.

Providing the young woman did not attempt to attack him for startling her and was willing to go along with the requests he was motioning:

The boy would position his left index finger over his mouth, a multilingual signal for silence. He would then raise right hand in a non-threatening manner, pulling back the sleeve of his cloak, and reveal the clawed gauntlet of oak and obsidian that was permanently attached to it. Thankfully the claws were currently withdrawn, giving them a far less menacing appearance. He would motioned toward the box and silently nod before walking over and reaching in. He watched for any sudden movement as he slowly moved his hand into the packaging peanuts. He was attempting not startle the small dragon, but was fully aware she may still lash out in fear.

Chloe was startled by suddenly someone speaking. She turned her head and aimed her flashlight at the direction of the voice while turning it on. This potentially blinded who it was aimed at.

There was a guy there. Younger than her. He looked calm as he motioned to be quiet. What was he doing here? Did she follow her in? Or was he looking for his cat maybe?
Chloe turned herself towards him redirecting her flashlight at the floor between them. She studied the person that seemed to have come out if nowhere.

Chloe stepped away as the guy motioned to open the box with some threatening looking gauntlet. While not exactly afraid of what the creature in the box could do to her, letting the owner handle it was always better. Less chance of scratches to the face. He seemed to know what he was doing so, let him

Artemis couldn't see at all from where she had hidden, which she regretted immediately. It was difficult to locate where the person was from inside the box. She was up slightly high, yes, but it wasn't above a person and wouldn't give her an advantage in any situation. 'Stupid, stupid!' she berated herself. Being able to see would've been more advantageous, but this is what she got for not thinking.

But the footsteps stopped right outside her box, and that voice echoed out again. It sounded a bit like someone trying to coax an animal out of hiding. A bit of doubt entered Artemis's mind. 'If I keep quiet and stay hidden, will they even know it's me?' The little dragon hoped so. She wished that her heart would stop pounding. It seemed so loud to the dragon, that she wouldn't be surprised if the one searching for her could find her based on it's thumps.

Another voice called out. It started the dragon more than she'd care to admit, causing the little dragon to clutch the bottom of the box and rip a few holes in it. It wasn't the soft feminine voice of the person who was trying to coax her out. It was deeper, male, but not any that she knew. Artemis knew that didn't mean much. Almost everyone on the island knew who the orphans were, and it was pretty easy to guess that a 1 foot tall dragon, whom no one had ever seen before the event, would fit into that group.

The little dragon didn't hear the second person walk over to the boxes, but she certainly heard it when he started to rummage about the packaging. Artemis hissed. Her heart felt like it was beating even faster, if that was possible. It was at times like these that she acutely felt the size difference between her and a "normal" size person. The little dragon tried to back away from the hand even more, causing the white foam bites to rustle and move.

Gjöll heard the dragon's hiss as he reached into the box. They had definitely found it, alright. The orphan's attempts to back away just made it easier to see they were. The boy slid his hand under their belly, making sure he had good hold before he tried to lift them. As he started to lift the dragon, it let out another short hiss, a final warning of sorts. It came as no surprise to him then, when he continued to lift it, that small orphan would lash and attempt to bite the hand that disturbed their hiding place. It's small fangs and strength of bite were not able to find a way through the stone and wood they would meet.

"I hardly think that was necessary!" The boy laughed, slowly bringing the trembling dragon up to eye level. He would move his left hand over to guard his face and gently rub the top of the dragons head as an attempt to comfort them as they continued to try and find a weak point in the gauntlet. "Though I guess you did try to warn me twice before you tried to defend yourself."

"Either of you understand English?" He questioned, adding an additional joking comment to the dragon. "Blink twice for yes since you seem to have your mouth full. He was fairly certain they were unable to speak. However, based on some of the reactions he had seen during the fight against Mercutio;as well as the impressive locking picking ability shown tonight, he was certain the dragon orphan was as smart as the average human if not more so. After getting their responses he would attempt to consul the terrified Orphan.

"Don't worry, your not in trouble." He assured the orphan. "As long as you don't leave the big island, or act out maliciously against anyone else, you aren't breaking any rules here." Gjöll hoped that the dragon would calm down and be able to relax. After everything they had been through, it was the least he could do to help them start their life over. "I am going to set you down now. I know from personal experience that being carried isn't the most dignifying experience." he announced, carefully placing the small dragon top of a closed box between him and the trampoline. Hopefully they would be calm enough not to run off.

"I'm pretty sure I haven't seen you around before." Gjöll turned and addressed the young woman, "And you seem far too well too put together to be an orphan, like this one. Who are you?"

Chloe made another step back when not a cat, but a lizard like creature got lifted out of the box. She heard it hiss. She aimed her flashlight near them to get a better look. That's when she noticed this creature also had wings.
c'est un dragon (it's a dragon)
She sounded surprised. And came closer to Artemis to study her. She hunkered down a bit to bring herself to the same height. She knew coming this close might not be wise, but she was confident that the creature was too busy trying to break free.
I've never seen an actual dragon before
She looked up. The one that came in asked if they understood English. She stood back upright.
yes, I speak English.
Chloe wanted to ask who this guy was, and who the dragon was supposed to be. But she noticed he was talking to the creature to calm it down. Maybe stop it from running away. So she refrained from asking questions for now.
After putting the dragon on the boxes, the guy turned to her. Ask her who she was. Chloe didn't bother grabbing her badge. It wasn't necessary for this. She smiled a bit at the remark he made.
I am Chloe Blanchette. Sheriff
She waved her hand to make sure they wouldn't freak out.
You're not in trouble. I thought a cat was wrecking the place and came to take a look. Who are you? And what do you mean when you refer to the dragon as an orphan?
Chloe addressed Gjoll and ignored Artemis for the most part. Since she had no indication of her being as smart as a regular human would be, she thought of her as Gjolls pet.

The little dragon was silent while she tried to sink her teeth into anything that would cause a reaction. She no longer hissed and didn't even growl. Whoever had a hold on her was gentle about it all, at least, but that didn't mean Artemis was going to let up. As she was lifted up, her body curled so that she had a grabs on the gauntlet as well. Her talons were doing just about as good a job as her teeth, which meant not a lot.

When she was pulled out of the box, her eyes fixed on the hand that she had been trying to gnaw off. Sudden realization of what she had been biting washed over her. Artemis relaxed her jaw a bit as she saw the smooth polished material. She didn't know if it was some part of this guy's quirk, but the wood that encased his hand was far too hard to bite through. 'Maybe there's a gap..?' the little dragon entertained the thought, but the material seemed so well woven together for it to be true.

Artemis was so focused on the hand that had grabbed her that she hadn't expected her head to be touched at all. She pulled away from it a bit, her eyes darted over to focus on Gjoll's face. The little dragons pupils were narrowed with suspicion and, despite that fact that it had no apparent affect, she kept her teeth fixated in place. Another warning hiss escaped from her mouth, although it was muffled. While she was an affectionate creature and did love "massages", as she called them, she only accepted them from people she knew, and knew well. This man in front of her, while looking slightly familiar, was still a stranger.

'At least he knows that I have a brain' the little dragon thought. Her eyes darted over to the curious Chloe. The other showed open amazement, as if seeing an exotic creature for the first time up close. Artemis glared daggers at the woman, acutely feeling the indignation of the entire situation. Packaging peanuts stuck to her feathers from the small friction that came from diving into them, and she had her teeth fixated on a persons arm.

Her opportunity to start acting like an obviously intelligent creature came quite soon with the question directed at them. Artemis huffed with annoyance and blinked twice. Even if she didn't have a mouthful of wood, she wouldn't have been able to respond in an understandably verbal way anyway.

The reassurances that she wasn't in trouble, as well as being spoken to like an equal, calmed the little dragon somewhat. Artemis removed her mouth from around the gauntlet, but didn't relax her grip on it until she was placed down on the box. She wore a sullen look on her face, if one could read her expressions, as she flicked her wings to try and get some of the pale foam off of her. The simple wing flick turned into a shake as more peanuts flew off, with only the odd stubborn one sticking.

Now that she was mostly clean, the little dragon raised herself up onto her hind quarters. Her tail flicked out and wings opened up, all helping to balance the creature. Artemis raised her hands and made some very specific motions. "I am not a beast" she signed, a bit miffed that Chloe had thought she was a cat, and didn't even bother to apologize for the case of mistaken identity. 'She certainly suits a sheriff, as she's clearly not a detective.'

Gjöll was intrigued by Chloe's announcement that she was the sheriff. He knew Mercutio had mentioned they would be bringing in a sheriff, but her arrival on Elysium was far sooner than he thought would it be. Most likely some strings had been pulled to expedite her arrival, one perks of being a well known hero he guessed. The sudden arrival of a thousand new residents combined with the sometimes illusive nature of Mercutio and his underlings made the choice to bring in a more visible and approachable symbol of justice and stability an easy one to understand. An authority figure not clad in the same garb as those responsible for the destruction of their previous lives would mostly likely be far easier for the new residents approach.

"Nice to meet you Sheriff Blanchette." he greeted returning the wave. "I am Feraocity, one of Mercutio's students and one of the first he brought here after establishing the country." He responded to her first question using the name Mercutio had given him, as he had grown accustom to it by now. The Sheriff's second question required would require a bit more tact to answer. He had no intention of outright lying to sheriff, but he also had no intention of revealing the full bloody truth to her. After all, Gjöll didn't know if Mercutio planned on telling her the full story himself or not, but it was highly likely she would hear it at some point during her work, whether she would believe it or not.

"They are one of the roughly one thousand orphaned refugees that Mercutio took in, in the wake of the events of the African Elections." He explained. "As the newly formed African government was not yet prepared for such a situation. If they had been forced to handle it, it very well could have resulted in collapse in government and/or the deaths of many of them. As it is possible that some of them could be in shock for years, Mercutio has instructed that none of them are leave to Elysium without his explicit permission."

As he had finished giving his explanation to the Sheriff, Gjöll returned his attention to the small dragon. They had just finished cleaning the majority of the packaging peanuts out of their wings, and now seemed to be scowling at the Sheriff while making some very precise gestures. He would realize it was sign language, but as he only knew a couple of words/signs in the language, he would not understand a thing they were signing. He was, however, very good at reading body language, and could tell the small one was irritated with the woman.

"I'm not sure, since I can't read sign language, but I think you did something to offend this one." he remarked. "Perhaps they did not take too kindly to be mistaken for some dumb trapped cat? Could be considered quite the insult, don't you think?" he asked rhetorically, wondering if the Sheriff would apologize.

"I can understand why you waited until now to find your way into here," He began, letting his curiosity get the better of him. "but I'm still having a hard time figuring out why a dragon would want to come to a gym anyway. There have to be at least a dozen better ways for you to train if physical strength is what you are after."

Chloe crossed her arm and leaned against the pile of boxes while Feraocity was explaining. She wondered why he had that name. maybe his quirk? did mercutio kidnap ever single person affected but not killed by his actions? what was he planning? creating an army? these were children! it's against international law to turn children into soldiers.
no, she couldn't realistically judge this situation. she needed more information. she needed to speak with mercutio.

Chloe's eyes had slowly moved to the ground getween Gjoll and her. but then raised her head again when he spoke about the dragon. she looked at its direction. oops, she didn't mean to offend anyone. She just thought there was a cat here. little did she know.
I ... did not know. I'm sorry to ... je suis desolé
Chloe elegantly pulled off her gloves and bowed towards artemis.
I had no idea you weren't a cat. I'm sorry for treating you like an animal. That is my fault and will never happen again. will you forgive me?
She held out her hand moving it up and down, trying to make it clear that she wanted the little dragon to shake it if she forgave her
after that, Chloe puts her bag on the ground between them and opened it. she looked through it, then pulled out a small notebook. the pen was attached. she detaches the pen and hand them to the dragon.
can you write? if you can, what is your name? I do not understand sign language. also, not because you are in trouble, but I'd like to know that as well

Artemis watched the conversation between the two, letting her annoyance stew. She did learn two interesting facts just by listening, which she committed to memory. The first was that this man in front of her, whom he called himself Feraocity, was a student of Mercutios. He seemed rather reasonable, and not at all the kind to just brutally murder someone. In fact, he had reassured Artemis that she wasn't in trouble. 'It's nice to know that there are decent people here...'

The little dragon was also happy to know that the enforcement of law was not going to be handled by Mercutio. At least, not directly. Even though Chloe seemed a bit "blind" to the orphan, she was certainly more approachable than the crimson hero. The sheriffs job was to keep the peace, and knowing that she was there for any problems that she had made the dragon feel more at ease.

The offered hand did perplex the dragon, however. She only knew that people shook hands in greeting, and being offered one now didn't make sense to her.'Surely the time to say hello has passed?' But Chloe was going on about forgiveness. Artemis gingerly accepted the hand, grasping on to some of the fingers. The human's hand dwarfed the dragons, but her grip was firm and sure for a little creature.

Gjoll directing the question towards her made Artemis swing her concentration from Chloe to him. She let go of the hand and huffed, her frustration of not being able to communicate properly with others easily coming to boil again. Artemis knew that there were better ways to train in strength, especially for someone her size, but she didn't need just pure strength. She needed...well, she wasn't sure what she needed apart from being able to fly. The little dragon flicked her wings in frustration, her thoughts going along the path of just showing them what she was doing, when Chloe handed her a note book and pen.

The question on whether or not she could write grated against the little dragons nerves. Chloe seemed to do many things to annoy the dragon, although lack of sleep and being terrified just before also played a part in how frayed her nerves were. Artemis took the notepad and pen, holding the writing instrument in her own special way, and scribbled on the paper furiously. Of course I can write! I am not a beast! The orphan turned the paper around to show the other two, directing a pointed glare at Chloe. If being annoyed by her intelligence being mistake for that of a common animal wasn't obvious before, it certainly was now.

Artemis huffed once more before placing the pad down on the box, preparing to write again. I am Artemis. I don't know how to fly, so I was using the tramp to learn. She once again turned the notepad around and held it up so that Chloe and Gjoll could read. The little dragon was a bit hesitant to share the information that her, a creature with beautiful wings, didn't know how to use them, but Mercutios student already knew that she was an orphan. Many of them are young, and she certainly fits into that category, so hoped that the other two wouldn't make fun of her for it.

After the little dragon shook her finger, Chloe smiled. she got up after they accepted her notebook and stepped back so that she wasn't blocking the view for Ferao. yes, she hardly knew this guy and already shortened his name.
Chloe turned around and aimed the flashlight at the trampoline on the other side of the room. This dragon had wings, how were they unable to fly? not enough strength in their wing muscles? or maybe the wings were to small to carry their weight.
Chloe turned back towards the little dragon.
can you show me?
She wasn't exactly sure why she asked artemis to do that. It's not like she knew anything about Ornitology or Biology. or airy-physics for that matter. What did she know about flight? but maybe she could come up with something if she saw them fly.
