Darkness.

Once again, Kaneda was in that familiar darkness that enshrouded him, unsure if this was dream or reality but staying vigilant to his surroundings just the same. Taking in a deep breath, he took a step forward, stumbling slightly, the youth confused about his sudden trip, but recomposed himself. This place was cold, something he hadn't felt here last time, blaming it due to his partial paralysis. The hair on his arms stood on end but a strange calm came over him, even as once again, the familiar shadow that had tried to suffocate him before reappeared before him. Kaneda showed now fear against the demon this time, fully aware that despite all the fear it tried to induce in him, this place was a limbo of sorts, and he was safe. Standing upright and firm, he stared at Oni as it limbered forward, reaching an outstretched claw towards his face, it's movements quick, but this time stopping just before it reached his face, sensing his lack of despise. Solemnly, a lonesome claw would reach back, retreating back to it's form.

"You cannot escape me, child." It's androgynous voice would echo outward, followed by a chuckle. Kaneda closed his eyes and smiled, taking a step forward.
"Trying to outrun a dream is futile. I know I can't escape you. But as long as you're here, you can't escape either. Whether your real or not doesn't matter. You can't hurt me in here. I'm no longer afraid." He would say, feeling the chills reside. The shadow would full on laugh this time, moving behind Kaneda, as if observing him.

"Just know, I will be watching you from you, an illusion in your dream, child..."

And then Kaneda's eye's opened.

The afternoon sun shone through the blinds of the hospital room, illuminating it brightly as Kaneda came too. White walls surrounded him with a single door in the room, and a large window to his left. Slowly Kaneda move his head to look at it, the desk to his side, and the bouquet of flowers in a vase. Closing his eyes for a moment, he took in a deep breath. Daisies. He loved the smell of daisies. Moving his arm up, he brushed the hair out of his eyes before he opened them up again, moving it back, his eyes then shooting open. He could move. He could move! Excitedly, he looked at his right hand, clenching his fist. His grip felt weak, as did the rest of his muscles, but it was a start! Tears began to overwhelm him as he realized that the woman's surgery had been a success, granting him the ability to move once again, keeping his dream alive. Wiping the tears from his eyes, he quickly looked around, moving the covers off his body. He wore a long hospital gown, covering all the down to his feet, which were bare. Slightly, he moved his feet, seeing the move back and forth, grinning.

"I can move!" He said, pushing himself up. It was a harder task than what he remembered but he could do it nonetheless. Taking a deep breath, he propped himself up against the head of the bed, looking to his left. A small button said "Push for help" on the side of the hospital bed, Kaneda figuring it would be best to get a nurse in here. But... something was off. He couldn't move his left arm still.

"What the hell?" He muttered, feeling a sharp pain of fear. Had it not been a full success? He used his right arm to lift it up, observing it, only to drop it. Lowering his head, he bared his teeth in frustration before taking another deep breath. Weakly, he moved his legs over the side of the bed, spotting the IV in his left arm that was attached to a small pole with wheels. Placing both his feet on the ground, he could feel the cold hospital floor beneath him as he attempted to stand up, stumbling, holding onto the IV pole for support. His left leg still didn't have much sensation either, making it hard for him to stand. Still, two out of four wasn't bad. Attempting to stand up, he used the pole as a crutch as he moved forward, his good leg still weak from not being used. How long had he been out? Hours? Days? Weeks? He needed to know. Pushing to button, he repositioned himself on the bed, sitting upright, waiting for a nurse to come and tell him just exactly what was going on.

This must have been one of the worst days in Chloe's life.
She got up this morning excited for a new start. the day of her transfer. The path to the answers she was looking for. Sure, she was stressed. who wouldn't be if you have 15 hours of traveltime coming. But that didn't stop her excitement.
it want downhill so fast ...
After getting ready and checking her luggage one last time, she got in a taxi to the airport. ofcourse she had to get through the ussual traffic jams around paris but that was all planned. what wasn't planned was the flightcrew on the airport going on strike. oh joy, delays! mildly pissed off already Chloe boarded her plane with a 6 hour delay. not just that but because of this delay, she had to get a new flight to get to elysium. and they only had 2 every day. which, of course, she just missed. now she had to wait 12 hours stuck in the transit zone. during that time she got a call. it was an officer in denmark asking why she didn't collected her luggage. so, great, not only did she miss a flight due to some stupid strike, now her luggage was also misplaced and would probably take several days longer to get them. and she already felt sweaty. she needed a shower, badly! and fresh clothes! no, not this chinese crap. something french!

Luckily for her, Chloe did not miss her next flight. sadly for her, her trouble didn't end there. during her time on the ferry to elysium she had ordered some food. but when taking the plate from the steward, she accidentally scratched her hand. This was bad. Chloe immediatelly realized this was bad. she quickly grabbed her bag looking for the antidote, and then realized she put it in her luggage this morning to avoid border control problems. her luggage, that was currently in copenhagen ... Merde!
Chloe sweared as she realized this. she told the steward to try and slow down the blood flowing from the wound as the hand was turning black. she in turn completely panicked and yelled at Chloe that she was a murderer and she was going to die. then another steward sedated her and quickly applied a tourniquet slowing down the bloodflow significantly stopping the spread.

The ferry finally arrived in Elysium. Chloe had arranged that she would go with the ambulance to the hospital. she probably had to explain the venom to the doctors there so it was best for her to just come with.

When Chloe arrived at the hospital she was in a really bad mood. if the lack of good sleep in the last 24 hours wasn't enough, she now had to deal with someone who might lose her hand and her job because of her. Not just that but it didn't look like she was going to get some quality rest in quite some time, let alone a decent change of clothes. it was clear to her. someone up there must really hate her.
The cart was pushed inside and chloe followed. she was immediatelly pushed into an emergency room with a doctor and all equipment at hand. Chloe explained what had happened and how the venom spreads. the doctor informed her that the steward might be lucky. the tourniquet did stop most of the venom from spreading and it didn't cause too much harm yet. with a little bit of luck, she should be alright.
A little bit of luck? ok, she's doomed Chloe said to herself. Then again, the steward wasn't Chloe. so maybe mr omnipotence was more favorable to her. While the doctor was applying a dialysis machine, Chloe left the room. she had a serious headache and needed a coffee. and some kind of snack for that matter. she didn't get to eat anything with the accident on the plane. she was starving.
She made her way to the cafeteria.

"A WEEK!?" Kaneda exclaimed at the nurse as he sat on the side of the bed. After a few minutes of waiting on the hospital staff, he had finally taken things into his own hands and ventured out into the hallways, only for a surprised nurse to scream in terror and run and get another nurse. For some reason, Kaneda didn't think well of this, only to find out that the hospital staff didn't think Kaneda was going to pull through and had been expected to die within a few days. They hadn't expected him to wake up a few days later and commended him for being able to get up at all. Getting him a proper wheelchair and wheeling him back to his room, he began to bombard them with questions.

"Where am I!?"
"What happened?"
"How long has it been?"
"Where's Crimson dude?"
"Where are my clothes!?"

A barrage of questions attacked the pink-haired nurse, but she patiently answered each one, only pausing when another nurse would call her name and ask her for help. After what seemed to be a millenia of questions, Kaneda had finally come to the end of his list, taking a heavy sigh as he asked.

"When do I get to go home?"

At this question, however, the nurse was silent. Looking away for a moment as she tried to think, Kaneda felt an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. Something about this didn't feel right, something hidden, but he didn't know exactly what yet.

"I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer to that question. Elysium staff have currently put you on a "do-not-discharge" status. And with what happened in Africa and you being the only non-orphan survivor..." She hesitated as she spoke, ending her sentence prematurely, but even before she picked it back up, Kaneda knew the answer, finishing it for her.

"I won't leave this island, will I?" He said somberly. She only nodded.
"That is my suspicion, Kaneda-kun. However, that is ultimately up to The Crimsoul. This is his domain and his word is law, and if there's one thing he is good for, it is keeping his word." She spoke. Her voice was timid and meek, like a mouse. There was a silence between them for a moment as Kaneda thought, the nurse looking at him curiously.

"Then where is he? Can I ask him myself?" He asked, cocking his head slightly as he did. She was hesitant again.
"I'm afraid I don't know, and I'm not allowed to let you leave the hospital under any circumstances." She said. He let out a sigh, falling back onto his bed, his stomach grumbling. He only just now remembered he hadn't had an ACTUAL meal in close to six days now.
"Then can I at least go get some food? You have a cafeteria, right?" He asked. She nodded.
"I'm not really supposed to let you leave the room, though." She would add, frowning. He sat up once more, this time glaring at her.
"Listen. I've been in a coma for a week. And before that, I had no feeling in anything below my neck. The LAST thing I want is to be cooped up in this room, glued to my bed." He would nearly shout, causing the nurse to flinch. At first, she would seemed timid once again, only for her expression to be replaced with a stern glance. Standing up, she would turn her back on Kaneda, walking towards the door.

"I am not supposed to let you leave this room. So don't you dare use that cane and go down the hall to the left just because I leave this door unlocked, understand?" She would say sternly, winking at him. Confused for a moment, he would only blink, his jaw slightly open as he processsed what just happened, but before he could respond, she would leave the room, leaving him alone. Looking at the chair she had been sitting in, he noticed that a new pair of clothes has been set out for him, to replace his hospital robe. Taking the IV out of his arm, he hobbled over to the chair, wheeled himself to the door and closed it, then began changing into his new clothes..

_____________________________________________________

Nearly thirty minutes later, Kaneda was using his good arm and his good leg to support most of his weight. Now able to get up and move around, he noticed that while his left leg did work, he still didn't have much feeling in it. It was almost as if it were in a state of being constantly asleep only without the tingly static feeling. Once he got the hang of walking, however, the hospital cafeteria was just a short trip around the corner. Inside, they had a few vending machines and a small line to stand for food, similar to a school lunch room. Hobbling over to the vending machine, he would look the items over, wondering if there was anything from Japan, but it looked as if a lot of it was western candy and then some other stuff he had no idea about. Reaching back into his wallet, he would pull it out, only to have a sudden realization that he actually didn't have any money. Letting out a groan, he would lean forward, resting his head on the vending machine.

"Aww man, can't I just catch ONE break!?"

It was at this moment that his attention shifted from food to the woman who had entered the room. the first thing he noticed was that she was tall, her stride elegant, but something was strange. Her skin was dark, but not the normal kind of pigmentation. If anything it was almost purple? He wasn't quite sure. But her eyes were black, as if staring into night itself. With his head still resting on the vending machine, Kaneda was taken back. She didn't wear nurses clothing and she didn't seem like Elysium staff. Who was this woman?

Chloe looked around the cafetaria. Where was the fastest way to get coffee. she scans the room for options and her eye falls onto the white haired boy. he was staring directly at her? did she look that terrible? oh, mon dieu non, what if the wind on the ferry completely made her hair look like a peacock. She comed to her hair as she walks towards the food stands. for a few moments she stared at what reflection she could make out at a drink dispenser. her hair didn't look that bad? Chloe fumbled a bit trying to get some rebelious strands to get in line. she heard the guy serving the food sigh, and quickly stopped.
The daily menu, for me 's ill vous plais
She couldn't help using her french. English was never her forte. it's something she would need to get used to around here.
The guy at the counter spooned some paste-like substance onto her plate. was this actually food? What was this "stuff"? never mind that now. she was hungry. this would have to do.
Chloe made her way to the checkout counter and then looked for a table to sit at. she stilll didn't have coffee though. and this was essential at the moment.
After putting her plate on an empty table, she made her way to the coffee-machine next to the vending machines. it might not be the strongest coffee but something was better than nothing. she inserted some coins into the machine and ordered a double espresso.
as the machine was preparing her coffee, chloe looked at her empty seat at the table. then turned to the boy.
Can I 'elp you?
She didn't really go out of her way to try and look helpful. in fact she looked like she almost threatening instead. a smile was something she really couldn't muster at the moment.

Kaneda watched the girl as she moved from the entrance to the line, then a table, and finally a coffee machine before she finally was fed up with his staring and asked him if she could help him in an almost intimidating tone. Taken back by this, forgetting that he was staring at a complete stranger, he straightened his posture and shook his head quickly, blushing in embarrassment.

"Oh, no! Err... I'm sorry." He would say, turning his attention back towards the vending machine. Kicking it with his not so good foot, he would sigh, moving himself towards the actual food line, grabbing a tray. Without saying a word, the cafeteria lady put a pile of goop on his tray, motioning him to move along, Kaneda grabbing an apple as he passed along as he tucked his cane under his arm and carried the tray in the other. Looking around, the cafe was particularly empty, save for the two strangers. Sheepishly, Kaneda approached her, clearing his throat as he did.

"Ahem... Excuse me, miss? Would you mind if I sat with you? It's kinda lonely in here and I haven't really seen anyone except hospital staff since I got here, heh." He would say, setting his tray down but standing, using his cane once more. If she obliged, he would let out a deep breath and then a smile, sitting across from her.

"Thank you, thank you. Kinda hard supporting yourself with mostly one leg."
He would say as he sat down, resting his can on the adjacent seat.
"The name's Kaneda. Kaneda Ikezi. And you are? You don't seem like the rest of the people here."

Chloe shook her head when the boy hobbled away. It wasn't his intention to scare him. this damn day! why can't it just end?
She grabbed her paper cup and sniffed her coffee. closing her eyes for a moment. this was not as bad as she thought it would be. it actually smelled like coffee.
She walked back to her place and sat down, quickly sipping her cup before getting ready to eat. in the corner of her eye she saw the boy. he was getting food as well.
then the boy walked in her direction. she quickly swallowed the ... uh ... goo? or whatever this was called, and straightened herself. she tried her best to smile but her headache really didn't allow for such things. so it was more of a grin.

The boy asked her if she could sit with her. well, sure? she motioned to the chair in front of her. Asseyer vous. she quickly swallowed the leftover food in her mouth. I mean, sit down That came off more as a command than a request. she waited for the boy to get seated. it only occured to her that maybe she could have helped him after the fact. "good one, chloe" she thought to herself "next time try being more proactive"
Je m... I'm Chloe Blanchette. I recently arrived on the island. She sipped her coffee again. I don't feel like transforming into one of these people any time soon. So I continue to stand out.
Chloes grin already melted away. she looks serious again. What happened with you? Broke a leg? Chloe put her cup back on the table as she asked. then leaned back and crossed her arms.

"A little bit more than a broken leg." He would say, grinning at the end of his statement. Adjusting himself slightly, he would use his right arm to point at his left, barely able to lift it. "I lost the ability to use my limbs. A week ago, I was a quadriplegic. The guy who runs this place found a doctor who restored most of my ability to move, however. I'm not at 100 percent but..." Kaneda would grin at her again, trying to stay positive. "It's a start." Suddenly, his eyes would open widely, realizing his rudeness.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you my name! My name is Kaneda Ikezi. I only recently came to the island too but this is my first time out and about. What brought you here, if I may ask?"

Chloe studies him a bit before answering. she's puzzled how a young boy who clearly didn't have a limb recently, suddenly lost the use of them. and if that is true, how they "got better". this is strange to say the least. was he attacked? was he attacking someone else and did they defend themselves? or was this an accident? and if anything, does "the who runs this place" responsible? that wouldn't surprise her. he sounded like a really dangerous and agressive person. I guess he does feel some remorse then if he took care of his victim afterwards.

Chloe leans back forward. she realized that her pose came off as if she was distancing herself
très heureuse
she shakes her head after saying that.
je suis desole. I'm not used to english yet
My name is Chloe Blanchette. It is nice to meet you. I am here for a new job. I am joining the police. chances are, if you do not leave the island, that you will see more of me soon

she looks at the door through which she entered, then stares back at Kaneda
but right now I'm more conserned with saving someone's life

"Joining the police, eh? Sounds interesting. And I don't think I'm leaving any time soon." He would add, not really knowing if he'd ever be able to leave again. Truthfully, he was now a prisoner of Mercutio's, as he had valuable information that could undo a lot of what WISH and Elysium had built. That made him both dangerous and valuable and he hoped he could use that. Not to necessarily blackmail Mercutio, no, but instead to get him to trust him. From what he had seen, they had similar goals, wanting to take down Oni and of course keeping the balance of things in check. If he could get Mercutio to train him to fight, then he wouldn't need UA or any kind of special hero school. Instead, he would be strong enough to just become a hero outright. At least, that was his goal.

Chloe looked at the door, then back to Kaneda, speaking of how she was concerned with saving a life. Halfway through shoveling some of the goop that they called food into his mouth, he would slowly lower his spoon, leaning in a bit.

"What do you mean, saving someone's life?"

do not speak with your mouth full
She grabbed her cup of coffee, looked at it, then put it back down. she pushed her plate aside as well since this really wasn't edible no matter how hungry you were. she just arrived and Chloe already missed the food from back home.
she then shook her head.
it does not matter. it is not someone I personally know
she sighed and stretches her arms into the air. the coffee didn't help yet.
I just need to wait
for a moment she doesn't say anything but she interrupts kaneda before he can say anything else
do you want something to drink? a coke? a coffee? or some beer maybe?

Chloe commanded him not to talk with his mouthful which quickly prompted him to instinctively swallow whatever was in his mouth all at once. Forcing it all down, he gasped slightly as he realized he bit off a bit more than he could chew with that last bite. She then said it was someone she didn't know and she needed to wait, only then finishing with offering him something to drink. He shook his head, pushing his plate away from him.

"I think I'm good, but thank you. The food here isn't that great." He would said, leaning his good arm on the table and leaning forward a bit.

"So, you're waiting? On what exactly?" He would lean back into his seat, crossing his arm over his midsection, looking around. The hospital was neat and nice but was definitely not high-tech. There weren't a lot of doctors or staff around and surveillance cameras weren't exactly abundant.

"Maybe I can help. Before I got injured, I was somewhat of a vigilante. That included gathering information. I'm not in the best shape to fight right now but I could at least keep my ears open for you. But i'll need a little bit more information." He said, trying to pushing more info out of her.

ah oui? c'est interessant (hmm interesting)
Chloe didn't really know what to make of this. a young boy just said he was a "vigilante"? that sounded like just another troublemaker to her. someone thinking they are above the law, and therefore ignore it and as such, they put others in unnecessary danger. or even kill them "for the greater good". she heard it before. her parents had died not too long ago, but it was justified according to WISH. Justified or not, they are still gone.
Then again, this boy was still young. this could be a game to him
let me get another coffee first
she picked up her first cup and drank it really fast before turning off her chair and making her way to the coffeemaker. she took another cup of the strongest they had and also bought a coke from the vending machine next to it.
when she got back, she first put the coke in front of Kaneda. she immitated the maids she used to see daily near montmartre.
voici, un coka pour vous (politely: here is a coke for you)
She then put her own cup on the table and sat back down in the most graceful way she could manage right now.
She ignored the question qbout what she was waiting for. this wasn't something he should be worried about. that was on her.
you are a vigilante. what kind of work have you done?
Chloe waited with sipping her coffee and unlike before, stares firmly at Kaneda with a straight emotionless face and pitch black eyes. her arms loosely crossed over her chest. sitting straight up. almost like she switched into work-mode.

She brought him a coke, setting it in front of him, to which he politely bowed his head, raising it back up and smiling. "Thank you, Chloe." He would reply, using his good hand to open it up, surprised at how well he could do it with one hand. After she sat back down, something seemed to shift as Chloe's expression went blank and he black eyes stared him down. Asking him what kind of work he had done as a vigilante. He took a sip of his carbonated drink before replying.

"Well, I started mostly with Yakuza in Tattooin. Smaller sub-gangs that terrorized students in the bad districts in town. From there, I went on to fight full-blown villains. I even had a run-in with Oni and survived." He said, almost with confidence. Taking another drink from his coke, he would let out a refreshing "Aahh." before continuing.

"I'm here because I was injured during the African Elections." He said, his tone losing it's joyfulness and optimism and in turn sounding more serious. "Luckily, Mercutio was on the scene and saved me." He added. It wasn't necessarily a lie, he just wasn't telling her that Mercutio was technically the one who broke his spine. It was need to know basis and she didn't need to know that

Chloe looked down at the table, but hadn't changed her posture in any other way.
I heard about what happened. You're lucky you're not dead.
Chloe had trained hard for this kind of thing. during her interrogation classes in the academy they learned how to be unreadable. Talking to Kaneda, getting him to talk about what happened. that was textbook. getting him to reconsider his life as a vigilante was the hard part.
She carefully reached for her coffee, drank from it and put it back exactly where she took it. all without taking her eyes of kaneda.
do have you know what would have happened if that injury was worse? or if mercutio hadn't shown up when he did?
When chloe switched to work mode, her english improved quite a bit. She was no longer mixing in french words and her french accent was not as apparent. she almost didn't look tired anymore either.
But for Chloe, this was tiring. She still had a headache. but this was more important. this was about someone's life, and maybe changing it for the better. Her motivation to do this weakened the effect of the traveltime she went through before. she hoped it wouldn't take that long to convince him. or, in case plan A failed, make him consider contacting her again so she could have another shot at it when she could be well-rested.

"Oh, I would have died, without a doubt." Kaneda said, laughing, sipping from his coke once more before setting it on the table. "But what does that have to do with... Oh, I see." Kaneda said, smirking. Sitting back in his seat, this was beginning to feel a lot like his last encounter with The General, which coincidentally was also in a hospital. "You think I was doing vigilante work in Africa, right?" He asked, wondering if his assumption was correct. Without letting Chloe reply, he would shake his head. "That's not the case. I was there with my mentor. He wanted to show me how to be a hero without going the physical route. How politics could save lives too. I originally agreed because I failed the UA exams. I didn't want to return to a life as a vigilante but still wanted to be involved in the hero scene. And look where that got me." He said, motioning towards his unusable arm.

"Anyways, I don't do the vigilante thing anymore. But that doesn't mean I still don't have those same skills. And please, save me the speech on WISH and the legality of what I've done. It's been put in the past and they've already reached out to me and told me to stop after I stopped a couple of villains from burning part of Tokyo down."
