The city of Sapporo in Northern Japan was many and various things, but perhaps the most prominent was this: it was a masterpiece.
An aerial view

Nature surrounded and permeated every section of the city, which made for quite the stunning view for the U.A. hopeful to see upon flying into the airspace. Mountains stretched far and wide in the north, and lush trees all but appeared to be taking the futuristic city back to a time long forgotten. Forests grew here in amongst the city itself, and provided the entire place with fresh air beyond what most would be used to. On sunny days like today, in spite of the bitter cold that the winter months brought to the mountains, it truly was a sight to behold.

A car and an escort would be arriving the intern’s arrival, as was previously arranged, to make sure that she didn’t get lost on the journey. They would drive away from the airport on the city outskirts and cross the entire built-up area. There were many and various huge sky rise buildings, each glistening with bright glass polished to a perfect shine. In spite of all these beautiful structures, which seemed perfect for a high-profile office such as Heikin to reside at, the driver didn’t show any signs of slowing as the non-descript silver car kept sliding through the streets. At the very extremes of the built-up portions of the city, he came to a junction and turned in the less-populated direction with ease. They started heading away from all of the hustle and bustle of the city, and towards the suburb areas of Sapporo. Wide arrays of forests and mountainous regions surrounded them now, and with the sun still beating down on the cold winter’s day, the place didn’t half look stunning.
Heikin's Sapporo Headquarters

After a good amount of driving away from the city, the driver took a turn at a beaten track, perhaps no bigger than the car he was driving. This winding lane led them back in the city’s direction, somewhat, but mostly took them way out into the surrounding forests and mountains which rose to the west. Breaking through the trees, they would instead come to what appeared to be a rather humble-looking Japanese homestead. Cherry blossom trees stood vigil at each side of it, their petals shedding and creating a shower as the car drove by and pulled up at a small panelled out-building.

The driver let himself out of the car, and did the same for the intern once outside. The location was beautiful, but… wasn’t this just somebody’s house? A young man with a shock of green hair, wearing a darker green coat with fur lining the hood and cuffs, seemed to be asleep in the rocking chair outside the house. Upon their approach, he snapped awake with a loud ‘Huh?!’ before grinning at the driver with recognition.
Yuuto Nishimura: The Heartthrob

“Whoops! Must have fallen asleep while meditating again!” He laughed good-naturedly, and started rubbing the back of his head a little. He then focused his attention on the new arrival and gave her a warm, welcoming grin before offering her his hand as he got to his feet. He wasn’t particularly tall, which certainly added to the friendly air he was giving out at present. Perhaps 5’10” at most. He wore crimson fingerless gloves with bizarre metal attachments to the backs of them, which would be something very noticeable now he was offering to shake hands with the newcomer. “Welcome, welcome! Great to see ya!” He told her happily, and proceeded to salute with his other hand. “Name’s Yuuto! You’ll be seeing my face around here quite a lot during your stay with us!”

With that, he gestured towards the door with both hands, and a single thin metallic glinting strip emerged from one of his fingers to lace around the door handle. This string opened the door and pushed it inwards swiftly, while he was bowing and grinning. “Shall we?” He started to head inside, but only after the new arrival went first. The driver followed close behind him as they entered the establishment, which still seemed much closer to a house than any form of Hero Office.

However, when they reached the main room, it was quite different indeed. The floor was covered with a glistening, highly polished metal substance, as was every other surface in the room. High-tech computer monitors were set at various points on stands, or set into the walls themselves. A globe, projected with in glowing blue lights, was visible at the table in the centre of the room. Various little red pinpricks lit up the map at differing intervals, before flashing a few times and disappearing. Small ‘bleeps’ and other technological sounds erupted from the equipment every so often, but otherwise, the room was perfectly silent. All but unnoticed in the room, a young-looking woman with very long, vibrant purple hair was sat at the far right side of the room, her back to the metal wall which also had a number of posters and recruitment advertisements for Heikin plastered all over it.
Zeyada Momo

Her eyes were covered by a bandage of sorts, and without moving a muscle from her meditative stance, a small smile edged its way onto her face when she sensed the arrival of other individuals. “Welcome. You must be Denali, correct?” She asked of the intern, immediately looking right in the girl’s direction. It wasn’t difficult for her to tell which person was new when she knew the signatures of everyone else apart from one. Obviously that one must be their newest recruit for the week. “I see that you have already met the charming Yuuto, and our dutiful driver Aoyama.” She continued in a tone just as calm and soft, just the tiniest hints of a smile in her voice. “My name is Zeyada Momo. I am the Commander of this base in Sapporo. It is quite the beautiful location, is it not?” She introduced herself first of all, and then asked a question of Denali as well in regards to the aesthetics of Sapporo. She got to her feet with one fluid movement, an odd blue energy assisting her in doing so, while simultaneously straightening out her clothes.

“Indeed, it would perhaps make more sense from a logistical stand-point to be within the city limits themselves. However, to truly fit with our Office and its ideals, we found a home here, in Sapporo’s beautiful outskirts.” She sounded as if she could see it all for herself, in spite of her eyes being blindfolded. She held her arms out to the wide windows which overlooked the back of the property, which provided a stunning view across a lovely sakura tree courtyard. “This area is overflowing with balance and harmony. And thus, it makes it the perfect location for our base of operations in Japan.” She explained further, and then turned back to face Denali with scary precision. “Do you have any questions to ask of me? If not, we will begin straight away with a test of aptitude.”

Wait… a what?!

Denali had been picking up her phone every five minutes, it was difficult for her to keep her head straight knowing that her mother had turned herself in and that the twister of chaos going on back home was seemingly getting more and more disastrous with every passing minute. Her father had assured her that he was fine, that their family hadn't been targeted by any villains or assassins, and that life was going on. The only wrinkle being that he was trying to sell and give back 'gifts' his mother had gotten to people who justly deserved them.

It was difficult to push her confessions out of her mind. The press pushing question after question on her, and her stalwartly trying to keep her composure as she answered each question. Even if her mother had done horrible things, actions that likely ruined the lives and livelihood of others she was still her mother. And watching her going through so much agonizing torment had really put a number on her mind.

Fortunately, the beautiful sights helped to calm her down a little as she enjoyed the brief plane ride. She couldn't let her family issues hamper her internship. Things would be dealt with in time, she'd just have to go and push through things like she always had.

Upon landing and getting escorted her eyes wandered at the beautiful natural sights that surrounded her. Times like these reminded her that beauty existed more than just in the city and that geography was always varied and specialized in different ways.

"This certainly is out of the way..." She always imagined that a natural disaster aid center would be closer to the hustle and bustle of the city. That way they could deal with flash floods, or quakes, or other things. But she figured they probably had a good reason as to why they were located out here. Still, she couldn't complain, the natural sights and sound had eased her troubled heart slightly as she inspected the mountains and the cherry blossoms that gently rained down onto the car and the surrounding areas.

As they rolled up to the magnificent house Denali's eyebrows raised up as she tried to figure out if this was for real. Wasn't this someone's house? It looked too clean and police and... well... peaceful to be a heroics office. And as she watched a green-haired young man had fallen out of his chair as they rolled up. Was this... someone else's private property?

Judging from the way he was going to greet them maybe this was the right place. She pulled out her backpack that had her suit and other needs. She smiled as she shook his hand vigorously. "Denali Masiff, nice to meet you." She said trying to not choke on the fact that her family name was soon going to be dragged through the mud.

As he opened the door with a metallic string she looked at him a little quizzically. "Quite the gentleman." She said as she walked inside, she did do a little bit of research on Heikin all things considering. This Yuto guy was apparently the face of the Japanansese offices and apparently a favorite among younger woman. Might be fun to talk about how she got to meet him, even if she already had a boyfriend.

As she walked inside she began to wonder why the office seemed so... calm. Like someone lived here rather than conducting operations. Eventually, however, they did get to the main room which had a metallic surface and whole lot of computer screens with bleeps. She assumed that they were probably little disasters or signals that were being pinged all over. Quite a lot of information to bring together.

Before she could even inspect it in detail her eyes went over to the woman with striking beauty. Her vibrant pink hair and quiet demeanor still seemed to command the room, even if it was done in a soft manner. As she was addressed she bowed slightly, unsure as to whether the woman was truly blind or if her eyes were just covered by some gadget of sorts. "Yes, Denali Masiff. It's a pleasure to meet you." She said as she responded to Zeyada's smile with a soft one of her own. "It is beautiful, I can see why it would be so easy to meditate here. Maybe I'll take up the opportunity when I get the chance myself." She looked over to Yuuto, who more or less looked to be napping rather than meditating.

"So it's more so about location matching with ideals. I can understand that after all it still seems that the offices across the world perform pretty well." She said as she looked around, balance and harmony were motifs of the office. Considering their location it seemed they chose a nice spot.

Though she was slightly anxious by how well Zeyada was able to look in her direction with her eyes covered. Maybe she could sense her or something?

Wait a test of aptitude?

"Er... exactly what is this test going to be about? Can I get changed real quick first?" She wanted to put on her hero suit at the very least before they got started with all this. She did have a lot more questions, "And uh... are all the pings on the screen disaster calls?" She hoped that the questions would at least give her enough time to warm up her body to get ready for whatever aptitude test they had planned for her.

In spite of the obvious urgency with which a natural disaster happened, Heikin seemed so… well, calm. Not only was Zeyada practically exuding tranquillity and softness, Yuuto had been suitably relaxed and familiar as well. The location of their base was truly stunning, and inside, it was certainly a technological masterpiece. All sorts of sophisticated equipment beeped away, and the red ping marks continued to show up on the projected globe hologram. Other colours popped up too; oranges, reds, yellows, and a few greens. None of the people in the room reacted to any of it, however, which clearly meant that they weren’t things that were consequential. Perhaps all would become clear in time.

At Denali’s comment about the location matching ideals, Zeyada nodded with a gesture to the wide open glass panels behind her, a slight tilt of her head sending a few of her violet locks spiralling over her shoulder. “Indeed. The other thing we have a huge amount of here is space, which is vital to our practises and training. You will become familiar with those soon enough.” She nodded, and then turned with a whimsical sort of smile as she faced the holographic globe projected in the centre of the room. “People always assume our bases are placed at random across the world, which is certainly not true. All of our branches are positioned strategically at hotspots for natural disasters worldwide.” She waved a hand gracefully in front of the globe projection, and a miniature blue holographic keyboard appeared in front of her fingers. She tapped some keys with rapid speed, and one by one, all of Heikin’s branches were displayed one after the other. Places like Alexandria in Egypt, various bases on Pacific islands… danger zones in the States. “Sapporo is known as one of the most prone locations in Japan when it comes to disasters, and that is why this branch was founded in its place.”

Finishing with her explanation, she lowered her hand slowly once more, and the keyboard-like construct disappeared in pixels as her hand passed through it like the object was just a ghostly entity. Zeyada was… well, certainly an enigma, to say the least.

Adding to the growing puzzle and surprises of this trip for the young intern, the Office Commander stated that a test of aptitude would soon follow. The questions asked made the violet-haired woman chuckle softly as she listened, folding her hands behind her back as she began to walk slowly towards the far right area of the room, where a set of crisp stainless steel doors were set. “It would hardly be a test of raw aptitude if I told you about it beforehand, and as such, you will soon see for yourself. In addition, the test changes on every occasion, so I cannot tell you regardless.” There was obvious mirth in her tone as she spoke, but not the sadistic sort of inflicting this test upon an unsuspecting party. More like… pure glee at the premise of this test.

“You may of course change into whatever clothes you find the comfiest. It will also be a good opportunity for you to see your quarters while you stay with us.” She paused in front of the door she had been walking towards, turning her head and looking directly at the driver who brought Denali here. “Aoyama here will show you to your room. I would send Yuuto, but I cannot say that I trust him to do so with an attractive young woman such as yourself.” The tiniest appearances of a smirk started to tug up at the corners of her mouth, and the green-haired man accused of such things gasped incredulously. “Then you really don’t know me, the upstanding gentleman Yuuto, at all!” He huffed, pouting and glaring at the beautiful woman waiting by the set of sophisticated doors. “Quite the opposite. I know you far too well. Come along, you will help me prepare the Facility.”

With that, she pressed a hand to onto the door panel and walked through them as they parted with a soft ‘hiss’, leaving Yuuto grumbling as he followed. “Sure, sure, Ms. Enigmatic... guh…” He disappeared through the doors after him, and they slid shut seconds after he did so. Aoyama gestured widely with both arms, in a clear indication that Denali should follow him, and he moved to the other side of the main room. Three sets of doors were evident here, and he led her through the first one.

They progressed down a long corridor, decorated beautifully with calming pastels and watercolour pictures. It felt very ‘homely’, nothing like the modern central space at all. Aoyama stopped at the first door on the right, and opened it with a low bow, indicating that Denali should go inside. It was a modest yet very pretty room, coloured pastel lilac on the walls and overlooking the rear of the base, thus affording a beautiful view. The bed was on the floor, in traditional Japanese style, and the floor too was reminiscent of this style. A basic little dresser could be found next to the bed, and a few other essentials that anybody might need. That, and an attached little bathroom through a door on the left within the room. Aoyama bowed lowly once more, and then left the intern to get prepared as she saw fit, all without a word.

When Denali was ready and headed in the direction that the others had clearly gone, through that set of metal doors on the right of the central base, she would be met with another large corridor. Only this was a direct contrast to the sleeping quarters section; more like the modern and sophisticated main space. Right at the end of this corridor, she would find another set of metal doors, left open. Clearly an indication for her to enter. Inside, she would be met with… well, probably yet another surprise.

The floor was of the same highly polished stainless steel she would be used to by now, but the walls… well, first and foremost, it was a high domed space. But the walls and up to the ceiling were… moving. Showing different locations at every blink of an eye. One second it painted a huge living picture of a tranquil field. The next it showed rubble and grey skies for miles. The picture was so clear that it might have been like looking out of a window, or actually being in that place itself. “Welcome to The Facility. This is a highly sophisticated real-time simulation room, the likes of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world.” Zeyada’s voice echoed over some form of intercom system. “You will be tested in many and various locations and disasters, all within this space. A randomised computer creates the algorithms, to make them unique for every examinee.” She still sounded extremely calm and cheerful, considering the enormity of this opening task.

“Are you ready? When the sequence begins, it cannot be stopped.” And so, the wait came for an answer. Was she ready for what seemed like the impossible?

Denali nodded slowly as she understood the point of having the locations placed where they were. Along with the fact that they were spacious. "Meditation and practice huh? I can see why that makes sense." Denali stated as she looked at where all the locations were. "In a way, it's a good thing that they're there, but otherwise people probably would feel upset knowing that they're in a place where they could b in danger." Well, it was better than being somewhere dangerous with no one around.

"What's the most common disaster that comes around here anyway?" She asked, curious as to what threats they deal with the most on this base.

Though before she'd let her mind wander about that answer her brow furrowed as Zeyada wouldn't give her the details about the aptitude test. Not that she could know, but she still seemed to be enjoying the fact that she'd be going in blind into something. "Well can't say that you're wrong, seems that everything I go through is a surprise these days though." She crossed her arms over her chest as she figured that there was no point in pressing further and that she'd have to get herself ready for whatever test they'd make up for her.

"Alright, I'll go and get changed. I kind of want to get a good feel for this place too." She enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere, she could rest easy knowing that her mind would be pretty safeguarded in a place as soothing as this.

She smiled sheepishly at Zeyada's compliment of her. Before she might've probably denied d it out right, but she simply grinned slightly as a purple blush went over her cheeks. "Thank you, though I'm sure that my boyfriend wouldn't be happy to know I had people pursuing me way out here while he was on an internship as well." She said hoping that the words would be enough deterrence for any uncouth actions.

She laughed under her breath as she saw the two hissing at one another. "Well, they get along well don't they?" She said to her silent guide as she followed him quietly through the gilded halls. Upon being escorted all the way she bowed at Aoyama before she got herself familiar with her own living space. As she sat down on her bed she looked at the awe-inspiring view for a few seconds, letting the beauty calm her down a little. "If only every day could be this beautiful." She sighed as she began to tuck away her clothes and put on her hero suit. As tight and clingy as the fabric was, she did like how it shimmered in the natural sunlight.

Though before walking out she sat atop of her bed, letting in the beauty one more time as she closed her eyes and did a brief meditation. A few minutes that she emptied her mind of all troubles and outside stimulation. All problems, all issues, all pain... gone for a brief moment and only the sounds of nature echoed in her head.

It was brief, but refreshing all the same, and she quickly headed back over to the floor where the other members were located. Metal doors leading to some kind of training facility, what looked to be awfully realistic and yet it changed so drastically. "Am I ready? Well I'm as ready as I can be for whatever it is that gets thrown at me." She said as she pumped herself up. She just hoped that the first thing she wouldn't have to delay with was like... an active volcano or a house fire.

Or a ship...

She shook her head. "No, no, I can do this! I won't be daunted by any hardships here!" She said adamantly as she waited for whatever test they had for her.

At the question of what disaster was the most common in this area, the handsome green-haired male tilted his head somewhat to the side with a contemplative look crossing his features. “The North of Japan sees a lot of earthquakes on a regular, so we’re often here to clean up in the aftermath of those. It’s pretty much routine now.” He smiled in that charming way of his, and gestured grandiosely with a winning sort of pose. “During summer months Sapporo also sees a fair share of Tsunami after effects. Some occasional tornadoes. Landslides. Blizzards. You name it, and it happens here more so than in most places in Japan.” He shrugged somewhat, but not in an uncaring manner. More so the fact that, well, a lot of those things were indeed unavoidable. That was why Heikin existed; to lessen the effects of Mother Nature when such things occurred.

To mess with nature and prevent disasters would disrupt a greater balance, so mitigation afterwards was key.

And thus, Denali was left with the activities and time to prepare for the aptitude test. Zeyada and Yuuto went to prepare The Facility, as they called it, and everything was still and quiet in the base. As the intern crossed back across the main area, however, one of the previously small pings which had been flashing orange every so often had started becoming a much more solid red hue, its blinking not as intermittent…

In the mystery room, later revealed by Zeyada what its purpose was, the luscious images continued to chop and change to a variety of pictures as time transpired. Even less savoury pictures looked all but beautiful with the crisp quality of the many and various panels around the room projecting it. Following the question from the Office’s leader about whether their intern was ready, she answered with an affirmative. Well, as ready as she could ever be when one considered the circumstance of the test being entirely randomised! Indeed, it was difficult to ever really be in full preparation when one considered those facts.

“Immersive Simulation starting up…”

A soft whirring noise echoed in the specialist space, accompanied by a generic calm robotic voice which sounded over the intercom. The pictures surrounding Denali would start quickening in pace; each landscape flashing by quicker than she could pick up on.

“Preparing hydraulics. Unique sequence initialised…

Start.

As soon as that last word echoed in the dome, the whole metal floor seemed to give way beneath Denali’s feet. Cracks and groans of materials being torn apart started echoing around with an insane amount of reverberation. The special screens surrounding the room showed a city all but heaving from the ground up, buildings collapsing and falling into rubble. Huge platforms embedded in the metal floor started rising and falling, simulating a high magnitude earthquake perfectly. A pillar raised beneath Denali’s feet, and when it crashed down to the floor again, she would find herself stood in front of… a house that seemed to be falling apart? And it wasn’t part of the projection screens around her. It was a physical building, slowly disintegrating under the quake intensity.

So this space could replicate buildings somehow, and its floor was creating huge quakes while the screens shifted to chaotic scene after chaotic scene. Screams and yells were heard through the intercom all round her, and a low, constant rumbling sound accompanied them in a horrid cacophony all the while.

It was an assault on all the senses, and time would only tell how she would react.

"Talk about getting hit from all fronts." Denali couldn't imagine having to deal with so many natural disasters. Blizzards, Earthquakes, landslides, tornadoes...

To some extent, you could at least prepare for those kinds of inevitable disasters but it still you could only mitigate damage to some extent. Perhaps there was something symbolic about having to defy natures will... and yet humans found a way to bend nature to them to some extent.

As Denali stretched her arms and legs in preparation for whatever was to come she flinched as a bunch of images flash around her. Changing as they went from less savory to more peaceful calm looking ones. But perhaps what scared her was the fact that they could change in an instant.

"Please don't use jump scares on me..." She was afraid of punching one of the screens and damaging equipment.

However as the pace of the images quickened, everything began to be a blur. It was starting to hurt more and more to try and focus, eventually, she just closed her eyes as she waited for what she assumed to be the test to start up. Even the robotic voice was lost on her as she covered her eyes trying to get some hold onto how to perceive the world around her.

Her feet wobbled as she the ground began to shift and move. Nearly collapsing ground underneath her feet. Instinctively her feet froze to the ground to gain stability, and soon after her body started freezing as a reinforcing armor grew over her body. "How in the world...!?" Her mind was racing to perceive the sudden change in her environment.

And as the pillar in front of her crashed, replaced with a house that seemed to slowly be disintegrating. The echoing screams cries for help, the rumble of tremors, filled Denali's gut with a mix of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. Could she hurry in before the entire building crumbled? Were there even people inside? Could she stand tall even in this... chaotic situation?

She seemingly hesitated for a minute, still trying to get her breathing, before the sound of ice clanging on ice rang in her head as she slapped her temples and forced her legs to move against the unstable ground. Freezing onto the ground with each step before raising the other foot to approach the collapsing building.

"Is anyone in there!? I'm coming in!" She cried out as she put faith in her daunting armor in hopes that maybe it would protect her and whoever was inside. "Are any of you trapped!? I'm going to get you out of here!"

The earthquake simulation was well and truly in full swing by now, with all of its sensory mechanics assaulting the intern. Shifting ground, real buildings and surroundings, sounds of terror and the continuous impending doom of an earthquake ripping apart the area. All of this combined made a very potent simulation which would be difficult to disconnect from as being anything else but reality, and that was all part of the design.

Otherwise, it would be difficult to prepare anyone for the outside world of real disasters.

The building that Denali approached had lost its roof, and one of the upper floor walls was crumbled away to rubble. The door was jammed against something, she would find, but with her firm shove, it flung open into the building. She would soon see that it was a small apartment complex, as seen by the sets of stairs and different mail boxes that had been strewn across the ground floor with falling debris in every direction. Cries and voices were coming from the nearest staircase, leading down to the basement of the complex. Interspersed between the other sounds echoing all around, were pleas for help. Her noisy entrance meant that the people in the basement heard the announced arrival, and they were starting to make more noise to attract attention.

“Please!! We’re down here! Help us!” This voice was loud and carried well up the stairs, but the next voice was considerably weaker and sounded almost child-like. “Help… need… please…” Alongside the people that would be heard in the basement, more voices would make themselves known upstairs in the building. It had three floors, as dictated by the roster of people living here which had been knocked to the ground by Denali’s feet. There were five apartments in the building, and a potential of five full families, perhaps all of them with children.

She would have to wait and see exactly how many people there were, but she would have to work fast regardless.

Denali herself had never had to deal with an intense earthquake such as this. But she nonetheless didn't have the luxury of easing herself into the situation. Considering that there was debris falling down and that there were cries for help coming from all directions she had to make the uncomfortable choice of picking one direction to go. She may have been Dauntless, but she wasn't able to multiply herself and to save everyone at once.

She raised her hand up to keep herself from getting knocked in the head from the falling debris. From the short time she got to inspect the place, she could already tell that the whole area was starting to crumble. And that there were people in all places that needed help. But she still made the conscious decision to head upstairs.

"I'm heading upstairs, for everyone else try and stay underneath sturdy desk and move along with it if the earth shakes!" She bellowed out, hoping that those in the basement and in the upper levels didn't try to venture out into the falling debris that was no doubt going to hurt someone who wasn't careful. For the time being it was just best to stay somewhere safe and bunker themselves.

"Heading to the first floor! Call out, and I'll be there in no time!" She continued to yell in hopes that the family would be easy to locate on the first floor. By the sight of the damage on the walls and ceilings, it wouldn't be long before the roof collapsed in this room and she needed to act fast. "I'm here! Just tell me where you are and I'll come and get you!" Her armor gleamed with whatever light was available, hopefully giving some faint hope to the people who saw her.

Voices started to drift to Denali as she ascended the staircase, and debris was falling from above her all the while. It would be difficult to make out what was being said, but the voices up here weren’t as desperate as others she would have heard. And they were coming from the lesser damaged apartment.

She would find, if she investigated, the apartment with its damaged door and chunks of wall missing was empty. Instead, people were gathered in the less damaged side to escape danger. Upon hearing the sound of somebody being here to help, the voices picked up in frequency and volume. Two teenagers, possibly siblings or twins by looking at them, appeared from the apartment and rushed to their saviour. “Thank heavens…” An older voice muttered, a middle-aged woman emerging from the apartment afterwards. Following this, a further six people came out to the hallway where Denali was. Four of them were a family, and the other two were a young couple, it seemed.

That aside, they were racing against the clock to get out safe and sound. “That’s everybody from this floor!!” The young man alongside his fiancée shouted for the Hero in training to hear, ushering the civilians to the staircase. It was clear that he had taken charge when this ‘earthquake’ hit, judging by how he continued to remain calm and in control of the whole situation.

A relief to the ice girl, surely, who had far more to worry about.

“Upstairs has it even worse!! I’ll get these guys out, don’t worry! Good luck!!” He was the last to leave the floor, hurrying down the stairs after his fiancée and ushering everybody along hastily.

“Who is that…?”
“Someone to help?!”
“Up here, up here!!”
“We’re trapped…!!”

Voices rang out from upstairs now, perhaps the second or third floor. It was difficult to truly tell. Indeed, the further up Denali ascended, the more problems she would find. Stairs started caving from the staircase leading upwards, which she would have to skip across quickly to avoid falling down into these missing spaces.

The longer she spent in the simulation, the more she would forget that it was indeed something designed to test her. Everything would seem unbelievably real; from the people in distress, to the feeling of solid material beneath her feet and hands as she moved and worked to help others. The way this simulation was so effective was how it played with all of the senses and manipulated them in a way that made everything seem very, almost scarily, real. It was how Heikin trained such battle-ready Office members across the world, because of this amazing technology.

When your training involved dealing with the unexpected, it became increasingly easy to jump into the field to deal with anything.

Denali was relieved to find that those here had managed to keep themselves safe. At least safe enough, it was smart of them to keep to the less damaged part of their rooms to escape the crumbling debris. She imagined that many of them probably wanted to just flee out of there as fast as they could without regard to the dangers that were ahead of them.

She silently counted the heads as they made their way out of their hiding places. Two teenagers, a middle-aged woman, a family of four, and a couple. All relatively unharmed. "Go down the stairs quickly, they're mostly undamaged but watch your step all the same. The quakes might end up causing some unnoticeable damage to the structure." She quickly ushered the family over to the stairs as hear head reared up towards the top of the building. Still more people to save, and only less time to do it.

"Excuse me, I don't mean to burden you. But there's a family at the basement, they're in stable condition for now and they seem to be safe for the time being. But I don't want to chance it, if you feel as though it's safe and only, and I can't stress this enough, only if you believe that you're able could you possibly try and escort those out from the basement outside." She didn't want to endanger the young man, but she couldn't be in two places at once. And if he was confident enough to possibly lead these people outside maybe he'd be willing to aid those trapped in the basement. "The stairs are slightly damaged to be careful if you do choose to do there."

She didn't wait for an answer as she headed towards the stairs but noticed that these were far more damaged and susceptible to even the addition of weight. No point in trying to be indomitable here, she needed to be able to just jet across the stairs as quickly as she could without letting time slip by. As such she let her armor get reabsorbed into her skin as she instead created skates on her feet to bound and leap quickly across the stairs to keep herself from falling prey to the traps. Hopefully, she'd be able to make it across without a serious downfall.

"I'm here! Where are trapped!?" She called out hoping that it wasn't anything too seriously difficult to move around. The building was collapsing at this rate and she needed to think of a way to get whoever was trapped on the upper floors down the damaged stairs in a quick and effective manner.

The young man who had successfully herded everybody on the first floor to safety was quick to assure the Hero on duty that everyone was safe, and he was just as quick to start leading the way for them to head downstairs. It certainly made Denali’s job easier, that was for sure. He ushered everyone down the stairs, and before he could start descending after them, Denali approached him and asked a favour of him. The young man listened intently, nodding and frowning with the seriousness of the whole situation. She asked if he would be able to help the family who had fled down to the basement, but only if it was safe to do so. The stairs were increasingly unstable, after all.

“Leave it with me, and I’ll do what I can.” He claimed bravely and smiled, briefly putting a hand on her arm. At that moment, she would feel something similar to an electric shock run up and down her arm where he touched her, and a break of the simulation could briefly be seen.

The man would appear to be nothing more than floating blue electric cubes, and a weird static sound would ring through her ears, followed by a bizarre hushed whisper that she wouldn’t quite be able to discern. As soon as the man left her, the simulation would fill in the gaps again, and she would be back in the immediate realms of chaos.

Her decision to skate up the stairs was a very solid one. The ice she used to skate up the stairs filled in a lot of the gaps where stair panels were missing, and a light frost started climbing up to the second floor with her. Upon reaching the landing, she would see one of the apartments entirely caved in, with a woman in her mid-twenties attempting to break through by pulling on pieces of debris. She turned her head when Denali appeared, panic present in her face. Her knuckles were bloody and her face was streaked with soot, but she didn’t appear fazed whatsoever.

“M-My… my baby is inside…” She let out a singular heart-wrenching sob, before continuing her desperate motions to try and break through the blocked doorway. The wood from the top of the door had broken off, and was blocking most of it diagonally. The rest of it was filled with felled dry-wall. Voices from the other apartment started picking up, and Denali would discover two young men huddled beneath the table immediately inside the space. A smart move; debris that had fallen inside had been broken first on the table, and they both appeared relatively unharmed.

“Thank god!” One of them gasped with relief at seeing the presence of a Hero on the scene, and gingerly started to move out from beneath the table as a sickening crack echoed throughout the building. The eastern side of the building, where both young men had been hiding, gave an awful lurch, and a huge crack appeared in the ground just in front of where they were both stood. It now separated them from safety and collapse, and the panic rose in both of their faces simultaneously as they realised that they were trapped.

When that crack echoed throughout the building, another strange lurching sensation would pull at Denali’s senses, like when the man from before had touched her shoulder. A very brief break in the simulation. But why…? It had been perfect until very recently, and now it was showing a sort of fragmentation. This bizarre break in the fabric of virtual reality was much briefer than previously, and she would be thrown right back into the here and now.

It was jarring and... breaking the immersion when she felt herself getting shocked from touching the man who would go on hopefully to help those trapped downstairs. Maybe it was just a glitch, but considering that everything else that she had gone through had felt so real this was more or less like taking notice of a blink. Even if you did it so many times during the day you rarely thought much about it.

Still, considering the situation she simply rubbed her arm and got back to work, trying to save as many people as she could through the massive earthquake that was going through.

Skating through the stairs seemed to be the right choice, along with the speed, having been able to fill the cracks in the floor she felt that she'd no doubt make it easier for those trying to escape. At worst they might slip and tumble a bit, but that was better than them potentially getting their foot stuck in a hole and then collapsing through the building to a painful demise.

Upon reaching the next set of families, she was terrified at the sight of seeing the rooms caving in. And a woman fruitlessly trying to get move the rubble aside. She moved past her, pointing to the stairs, "Mam I know that you want your child safe, but I need you to go and get out of here while it's safe. I'll take care of it from here. Rest assured I'll get through this and safely return your child, but you need to be alive too." After all, even if she saved the child, the baby having no parents certainly not the way that she wanted this to go.

Letting her skates meld back into her feet, she figured that now was the time to bring on the brute strength and to start tearing through these rubble piles. But before she could she spotted two young boys huddled underneath a table. It was reassuring to know that they were safe enough from anything falling on them. But watching the huge crack create a near impossible gap from them to jump across she was once again left with the painful decision of who to save and how to save them.

Thinking fast she looked at the wood door, it as the only thing that she could possible to use for a bridge. She coated herself with armor, strengthing her resolve as she moved to pull the door off in its entirety. It would open up a path to the baby, and hopefully, allow for her to quickly escape out of there. She moved over to the two boys, hoping that they wouldn't end up doing anything drastic while she moved over there. Her plan was to freeze the door overtop of the crack, hoping to be suitably give the boys a means of escape before the whole thing collapsed underneath them. "GO! Hurry up and get over here!" She beckoned only to turn back towards the room where the baby was. "Get over here and then head down the stairs and go outside, and move as far away from the building as possible.

Hopefully, with that figured out, she could rush back into the room with the supposed baby. Perhaps there would be a crib, or the sound of crying, anything to indicate where the helpless child would be.

Her thoughts were interrupted, however, as the building seemed to break from the simulation. This time it was much more jarring than the last time, and even though it was shorter than the last she couldn't help but wonder if there were some technical difficulties going on. She figured that they'd fix it sooner or later. And that she'd just need to keep on trucking through the simulation as if it were real.

Reality within the simulation continued, with the constant shaking earthquake and sounds of destruction all around. People chattering or speaking loudly above the insane amount of noise also added to the chaos within the current situation, and would otherwise make it very difficult to focus. But the intern within the simulated reality was doing very well at pushing onwards and working without being flustered or overwhelmed.

It helped calm anybody she came into contact with, as seen when she approached the frantic mother hoping to get to her child within the sealed up apartment. She nodded shakily and a singular tear slipped from her eye, sliding down her cheek as she had to turn away and run down the stairs.

Quick thinking with a combination from Denali also meant that the two youths in the other apartment wouldn’t go spiralling down through a widening crack in their side of the building, and they hastily started scrambling to get over to safety. “Thank you!!” One of them shouted above the loud mess of sounds currently enveloping them. They helped one another across using the door as a sort of bridge, with it frozen in place over the deadly fissure.

The continued breaks in the simulation would indeed be distracting, and the intern stopping in her tracks briefly was justified. Especially when the breaks continued much more, with images of blue floating cubes in front of her eyes where the wall should be.

“… Den… ali…”

A sound of her name, albeit broken somewhat through a fragmented travelling through the dusty air, would make itself known to the hopeful Hero girl. The more she tried to focus, the more she would be faced with the reality that it would be impossible. The simulation was unravelling around her, in front of her eyes. A screaming baby, yells and shouts from people in pain, and her own name uttered as a persistent whisper in her brain would make it impossible for her to focus on any one thing except from her falling body as the floor disappeared from beneath her feet.

Almost as soon as the floor vanished, she would feel herself landing harshly on a metallic substance; its lack of heat almost able to cause her shiver with the change in temperature. When she next opened her eyes, she would see a familiar room with its shifting and changing images, and the fully stainless steel ground. Immediately at her side, a bizarre ghostly serpentine figure was coiled with a piercing gaze of crimson focused on her.

“Sssssorry for the rude interruption.” Its ‘s’ sound was elongated in a hiss, to match its snake-like appearance. But it wouldn’t look like any snake in particular, except perhaps a very pale cobra with an even more wicked gaze. “Lady Zeyada inssssstructed me to bring you out of the simulation. We have an emergency on our handssss.” It hissed once more, starting to slither towards the exit of the simulation room.
Fuuta Lyeng "Gin"

Wait… an emergency?

It obviously meant for her to follow, and looked back at her a few times to make sure that she was doing just that. As they left, the serpentine creature kept its gaze fixed on the direction they were heading in. A few light nodes up in the steel-brushed ceiling were flashing red, a clear sign that an emergency was indeed upon them. “You may call me Fuuta. But in the field, I go by Gin.” It spoke again. With its voice being decidedly male, it may well be as such. Fuuta, as he called himself, didn’t avert his gaze from the corridor ahead of them. No sirens were blaring, but the lights continued pulsating as if sirens should be accompanying them. When one considered the fact that the Office’s leader was blind, it would surely make sense to have some form of audible emergency signal too.

“You weren’t half buried deep in that sssssimulation. I had sssssome trouble yanking you out of it.” He chuckled briefly and shook his head, the two little ‘flipper’ sort of things shaking as he did so. When they reached the main business area of the Heikin base, they would immediately find Zeyada and Yuuto stationed at the large projected globe. A node within Japan was flashing brightly, a very noticeable red, accompanied with a large exclamation point overtop of it.

Once more, Zeyada immediately looked up when they entered the room, knowing exactly where Denali and Fuuta were respectively. “It appears that you will be able to put your simulation practise into use.” She mused aloud reaching behind her head to tighten her stylised bandages. “Hakodate is experiencing a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. It may cause damage to buildings and put people at risk, so we have been alerted to go and control the after-effects of it.” The Office leader explained, even though Yuuto and Fuuta seemed to know already. It was more for Denali’s benefit, of course.

There seemed to be no question that their intern would be going along with them, regardless of what the girl herself felt on the matter. “With your obvious aptitude for our work, it would be silly not to bring you on this mission, Denali.” Fuuta piqued up next to her, and the green-haired Yuuto was grinning over at the disaster sensor globe. “Yeah, you’ll do great! Scored probably one of the highest marks in the simulation.” He claimed with clear encouragement, all while Zeyada was smiling politely and in a reserved manner.

“If you are ready… let us go and do our job.”

Denali continued through the simulation, trying to ignore the brief little problems that were occurring around her and focusing on what her eyes could actually perceive. "No problem, just keep on going down and don't stop. Even when you exit the building just go to as clear and area as you can far from trees, buildings, or any other debris." It was the safest thing to do, after all, you never knew what was liable to collapse in the event of an earthquake. Not that she knew that from personal experience but it certainly seemed like the right thing to do. Can't really be hurt if there's nothing to crash on top of you.

However, once she started seeing floating blue cubes her immersion was broken. She hesitated, unsure if this was a serious glitch of if maybe there was some kind of reason for all these interruptions. And when she could hear her name being called out she felt a shiver go through her skin. "Uh... is this part of the simulation?" Her eyes looked around as she tried to get a grip on what was happening and yet it all seemed to be distorting around her out of her own cognitive control.

And then the sensation of falling.

Her heart raced faster as she felt the helpless feeling of falling whizz around her skin. Her armor naturally tensed around her body as she tried to brace herself for whatever surface she was going to land onto. Though it didn't take long for her body to collide with the cold metallic ground, even with her body being used to the cold and honestly feeling more comfortable being surrounded by it, she still shivered slightly from the impact.

As she raised her head off the ground and looked out to see some sort of ghastly serpent her armor froze over her body again. Spikes poking out in front of her like a natural self-defense mechanism to protect herself against what could've been perceived as a threat. She found herself to be paralyzed for a moment until the creature spoke out and her heart began to slow down again. "I-It's okay." She managed to speak as she stood up. Her armor starting to slack off her body and the spikes going back into her skin. However, what was more important was the fact that there was some kind of actual emergency going on.

"What happening? Is there some kind of attack going on nearby? Some people in need of help or something along those lines?" That was her first assumption. She followed diligently behind Gin as she looked toward the hall. "It's an honor to mee you Fuuta" She spoke calmly, quickly getting acclimated to the serpent creature beside her. It was still a shock, but she was slowly warming up to the esteemed member following up beside her. She blushed slightly as she turned away from Fuuta speaking about her being so deep and into the simulation. "Just trying to imagine it as the real deal... do it when it doesn't matter so that you'll do it when it does. That's something that my mother always said to me." If you practiced diligently, then the real deal wouldn't be so bad.

Which was good, considering that she was being called in to respond to an earthquake of high magnitude over in Hakodate. Pat of her was excited to already get herself into the field, and another part of her was wrecked with nervousness. But she simply took a breath before clanging er fists together. "A-Alright!" There were people in danger, and she was sure that there was little she could do to make things worse. She'd either help out in a big way, or she'd help out in a minor way, but she wasn't going to be a jeopardy to the mission if she got involved.

It helped that the others were giving her props for her good work in the simulation and that apparently she had the 'aptitude' for the work. She smiled, feeling moe confident that she had the stuff for a real life emergency. "It'll be an honor to be putting my skills to the test and to help the people." She grinned as her armor seemingly glowed with intensity. "I'm ready! Let's get out there and do just work!" A surge of confidence bolstered her words as she prepared for whatever devistation would stand in her way.

With Denali being so prepared for what was to come, the group of Heikin Office members were quick to respond to the disaster. She would be swiftly ushered out of the main base, outside into the rear courtyard where a hidden bunker underground was revealed. A platform rose from beneath the ground, presenting a helicopter belonging to the prestigious Office. It was of the highest spec and quality, to ensure that they could respond quickly and effectively, without fear of encountering problems on the journey.

“We will lay down the brief as we fly to the location.” Zeyada explained, gracefully hopping up into the helicopter followed by her team. Fuuta slithered up next, with Yuuto going next before offering a hand to Denali to help her up into the main open doors of the vehicle. With everybody inside, the engines were started and the blades started whirring loudly. Denali would recognise a familiar face behind the controls in the cockpit, visible through a small gap between the seats on that side. It was the mute driver who had brought her here. Apparently he was the Office’s primary method of transport, it seemed.

As they were lifting into the air, the Office Leader cleared her throat and held her palms out in front of her, beginning to weave a construct which sat in the air between both sides of seats. That way, everybody could see what she would be illustrating. The blue energy-like construct took the shape of a town, presumably the place where they would be flying to. “Because the magnitude is not too severe, we will mainly be tasked with helping the general public.” The violet-haired lady explained, and following this, the main bulk of buildings within her energy construct flashed blue. “Yuuto, you will be tasked with keeping everything together as usual.” She stated, and the green-haired man nodded in response with his trademark grin already on his face. “Fuuta, you will be aiding trapped civilians specifically.” She looked next to the serpentine figure, who nodded his head firmly in understanding.

“That leaves us, Denali, to secure a safe location for the civilians. I can quite happily form an energy construct to house them if you act as a means of escorting them all to it.” An open space in what looked like a field was highlighted at that point, showing the place where they would most likely form this sort of safe house for the civilians.

With the helicopter as a means of flying them into the disaster zone itself, they reached the town quickly. Not long after Zeyada had laid out their plan of action, they were hovering above a place to land. “Looksssss like we have arrived.” Fuuta mused and slithered into an upright position from being coiled on the seats behind their pilot, positioning himself beside one of the side doors. “Get ready, Denali. We’re gonna get dropped to the ground just outside the town, and Aoyama will have to set ‘er down away from here.” Yuuto piqued up, jostling the intern’s shoulder and grinning widely at her with his emerald eyes glinting with excitement. It seemed there wasn’t much he was perturbed by.

In general, the whole team seemed immensely calm. Considering there were only three members of the Office, one intern, and one pilot/ driver on this dangerous mission, they were all so relaxed and held such casual body language. The helicopter started hovering over a section of grass just outside of the stricken location, and the doors slid open with a huge gust of wind buffeting at them immediately afterwards. It was a short jump down, which everybody started taking one after another.

“Rendezvous at the energy dome when everything has been resolved.” Zeyada instructed, and the two others immediately set to work. Fuuta jumped from the helicopter and immediately dissolved into the ground as he would otherwise make a stopping impact. Yuuto launched long metallic strings from his knuckles as he hung out of the helicopter, latching onto the nearest large building which happened to be a community centre. He proceeded to swing his way up there with ease. Zeyada projected a platform of blue energy which she used to step down onto, and land softly on the grassy field beneath them.

As soon as Denali was clear of the helicopter too, Aoyama took off once more and went to find somewhere that he could set the flying contraption down. “Shall we get started?” The Office Leader asked as calm as could be, smiling at the intern and gesturing for the both of them to head out.

They had a mission to complete, people to save, and a disaster to avert.

That was the name of the Heikin Office and their whole specialty. The earthquake was allowed to run its course, all while the members of the Office held the town together and soothed the panicked civilians. It was a destructive part of nature, but it was natural all the same. It was all over in five or six hours; understandably an exhausting experience, but the top three hardly seemed fazed by the time spent working.

That would set the tone for the rest of Denali’s stay with them. While no major disasters occurred for the rest of the week (talk a baptism of fire having to experience it on the first day), everything they tackled was done so with the utmost calmness and professionalism. In order to fill the void of active duty for the rest of the Internship, the top three all took turns training with the intern to show them different methods of aid in a disaster.

Yuuto demonstrated methods of mitigating destruction of buildings in an urban area, done in Heikin’s handy training fields that were hidden beneath ground out in nature itself. His quirk allowed him to hold crumbling constructs at bay, and very high mobility. He would work with Denali to use her ice quirk to patch up buildings from the outside, so they would be safer to vacate in the scene of a disaster.

Fuuta would share his expertise in environmental awareness, and therefore being able to quickly respond to trapped civilians before they became too injured. His quirk allowed him to slip unhindered through all materials, which made it understandably easy for him. However, he was persistent in helping Denali in whatever way he could.

And Zeyada would work with the idea and concept of tranquillity. A sense of self would help a person start using all of the abilities at their disposal, even if one was in absence. Because of her blindness, she relied upon all of her other senses which she had worked to greatly enhance. Her quirk also aided in this, with her ability to sense energy flow around her, and make constructs in such a way, but she mainly focused on helping the intern see alternative views of the world. Taking away a sense of hers at a time, and switching it all around, she hoped to give the girl a different perspective and method of Heroing.

And so came the week’s end.

Friday late evening, to be precise. It had consisted of a day filled with training, and now it was time for their last meal together before Denali left the next morning. But they would not be found in the base’s main room… or in the simulation space… not even the belowground, or aboveground training fields…
